Black Hills State track and field competed in their first indoor meet of the season at home as they hosted the Yellow Jacket Holiday open Friday and Saturday at the Donald E Young Center Field House.
The women's team was able to tally 142 points and snag first out of four teams will the men tallied 83 points and were third out of five teams.
Kyla Sawvell had a strong first outing as she earned provisional marks in both the women's hammer throw and the women's shot put. Sawvell earned a mark of 18.34m (60' 2") in the hammer throw and 14.39m (47' 2.5") in the shot put.
Sprints/Hurdles
Breanne Fuller started the season on a high note with a pair of first place finishes in both the 60M dash (7.81) and the 200M dash (25.83). Freshman
Mason Sartain placed first in the men's 200M dash with a time of 23.10 while also placing second in the 60M dash with a time of 7.12.
Shane McGraw recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400M dash with a time of 51.92.
Sophie Curtis was the lone hurdler for the Yellow Jackets to place top five recording a first-place finish in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.58.
Distance
Taylor Lundquist was the top finisher for the distance athletes recording a first-place finish in the 3000M run with a time of 12:24.42 to start her season. For the men,
Marcos Valerio and
Noah Bordewyk competed in the 5000M run earning third and fourth, respectively. Valerio complete the race with a time of 16:06.77 while Bordewyk came across the line close behind with a time of 16:07.67.
Jumps/Vaults
For the women
Whitney Scott started her season out with a first-place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 3.50m (11' 5.75") while
Ryan Foy place first for the men with a vault of 4.62m (13' 11.75"). Freshman
Trevor Brangham earned a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.79m (5'10.5") he also earned a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.78m (38' 7.75"). Another freshman placed top five on the women's side in the triple jump with
Jessica Martian placing second earning a mark of 9.54m (31' 3.75"). Freshman
Jessica Martian placed fourth for the women in long jump earning a mark of 4.52m (14'10"). For the men
Mason Sartain also placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 6.26m (20' 6.5") to begin his collegiate career.
Throws
The women had a strong outing as a team in the throws with four of the top five spots in shot put going to the Yellow Jackets and two Yellow Jackets sweeping first and second in the weight throw.
Kyla Sawvell,
Alexandra Cameron,
Jadyn Gackle, and
Makayla Friederich were the top finishers for BHSU in shot put. Kyla earned first with her provisional mark of 14.39m while
Alexandra Cameron came in second with a mark of 12.49m (40' 11.75").
Jadyn Gackle recorded a mark of 11.93m (39' 1.75") which was good enough for third while
Makayla Friederich placed fifth with a mark of 11.84m (38' 10.25"). In the weight throw Sawvell's provisional mark in the weight throw earned her a first-place finish. While
Savannah Perez started her season strong with a mark of 16.82m (55' 2.25") and a second-place finish for the Yellow Jackets.
Relays
The women's 4x400 relay placed second with a time of 4:23.86 while the men's 4x400 relay placed fourth with a time of 3:41.67. The women's 4x4 was ran by
Sophie Curtis,

Hannah Struble, and
Taylor Lundquist while the men's 4x4 was ran by
Frank Becker,
Nicholas Hale,
Shane McGraw, and
Marcos Valerio.
