Yellow Jackets Sink Eagles 59-39 on Senior Night

Twelve Yellow Jackets score against the Eagles in route to a 59-39 victory at the Donald E. Young Center Tuesday night.

The Yellow Jackets came out hot in the first quarter starting five of six seniors on the team. After a missed shot by both teams, Kassie Hoyer got on the board first with a layup to open up scoring for BHSU. Once the Yellow Jackets got on the board, they would not slow down for the entirety of the first quarter maintaining outstanding defensive play and outscoring the Eagles 22-6.

The Yellow Jackets would not let up on defense in the second quarter pulling in 11 boards and tallying two steals. Meanwhile on offense the Yellow Jackets would open up scoring taking a 28-point lead over the Eagles led by sophomore Niki Van Wyk who recorded 11 points in the first half.

Coming out of the break the Yellow Jackets offense would cool off slightly as they would only put up 10 points in the 3rd quarter. However, the defense would stay hot holding the Eagles to 12 points allowing the Yellow Jackets to hold a 26-point lead into the final ten minutes of regulation.

The Eagles had their best offensive quarter of the night in the fourth quarter putting up 16 points against BHSU's stout defense. However, with the Yellow Jackets offense keeping pace putting up 10 of their own points the game would stay in favor of BHSU. Behind an all-around team offensive and defensive effort the Yellow Jackets would win the contest 59-39.

Leading the Yellow Jackets in scoring were senior Racquel Wientjes and sophomore Niki Van Wyk who had 11 points apiece. Close behind were Morgan Ham with six and Kassie Hoyer with eight points each. Defensively BHSU was led in steals by Racquel Wientjes with three and Megan Engesser with two. Katie Messler led the team in rebounds with seven while Ashley Davis was close behind with six.

As a team the Yellow Jackets were 19-of-59 from the field (32.2%) and 11-of-36 (30.6%) from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe BHSU shot 71.4% making 10 out of 14 free throws.
