Black Hills State track and field is set to open the outdoor season at home in the Yellow Jacket Spring Open Saturday March 27th and Sunday March 28th.
 
After wrapping up a successful indoor season with five athletes competing in four events at the NCAA DII Indoor National Championships in Birmingham, Alabama March 11-13, the whole Yellow Jacket track and field team is ready to get the outdoor season started.
 
Last season the Yellow Jackets were unable to compete in any outdoor competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time BHSU was able to compete outdoors was at the NCAA DII Outdoor National Championships held May 23-25, 2019.
 
Competition begins Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with the decathlon followed by the heptathlon beginning at 1:30. Next up is the women's weight throw beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the men's weight throw to follow.
 
Sunday the decathlon and heptathlon will wrap up competition beginning at 9:00 and 9:15 a.m., respectively followed by the 10K which the men and women will run together at 10:00 a.m. on the track. Field events begin at noon with the women competing in the pole vault, long jump, and shot put while the men will begin in high jump, and discus. Triple jump will follow the completion of long jump and javelin will begin at 2:00 p.m.
 
Running events will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the men's events followed by the women. Starting out the day on the track will be the steeplechase followed by the 4x100m relay, 1500m run, 110/100 hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash, 800m run, 400 hurdles, 200m dash, 5000m run, and the final event of the meet will be the 4x400m relay.

Teams joining the Yellow Jackets at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open include Chadron, Concordia-St. Paul, Dickinson State, Jamestown, Minot State, MSU Billings, Rocky Mountain, South Dakota School of Mines, UMary, and Valley City State.
 
Fans are permitted to attend the Yellow Jackets Spring Open, however masks will be required to be worn by all those in attendance.
