The Black Hills State women's basketball team looks to advance to RMAC Tournament finals as they take on Western Colorado Friday night in Golden, Colo.
The Yellow Jackets stunned the Westminster Griffins Tuesday night in Salt Lake City putting up 71 points while sinking 13 3-pointers. BHSU was led in scoring by
Racquel Wientjes who recorded 22 points while shooting 57.1% from the field. Wientjes also led the team in defense recording 4 steals and tallying two rebounds.
Western Colorado comes into the contest off a win against the sixth seeded South Dakota Mines, 77-69. The Mountaineers are the number three seed in tournament play.
This season the Yellow Jackets have been led by senior forward
Racquel Wientjes who is averaging 19.4 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, and 28.5 minutes played per game. She is backed up by sophomore guard
Megan Engesser who is averaging 11.4 points per game and currently leads the RMAC in 3-point field goal percentage.
Earlier this season the Yellow Jackets and Mountaineers faced off twice and both contests went the way of the Mountaineers. In Yellow Jackets season opener, both teams came out hot and the game stayed close for the first three quarters of play before the Mountaineers pulled ahead in the fourth ultimately taking the win 81-74. In the second matchup the teams again kept the game tight, this time through all four quarters of play forcing overtime. Overtime did not go in favor of BHSU as they would be outscored 10-1 to set up the game final 70-61.
Historically, the Yellow Jackets hold a slight edge over the Mountaineers winning 9 of their last 12 matchups.
A win on Friday night would put the Yellow Jackets in the RMAC Tournament Finals for just the third time in program history to face off against the winner of top-seeded Colorado School of Mines and fourth-seeded Colorado Mesa on 7 p.m. Saturday, while a loss would send the Yellow Jackets into off season preparations.
