Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

Black Hills State softball split its doubleheader with CSU Pueblo on Saturday, falling 3-1 in game one and winning 6-3 in game two.

The Yellow Jackets move to 3-20 on the season, both overall and in the RMAC.

On the day, freshman Shayla Tuschen extended her hitting streak to eight games in a row, while BHSU snapped its 19-game losing streak.

Game One (L, 3-1)
CSU Pueblo opened the scoring with three runs in the second off Breanne Henricksen, but she would hold them scoreless the rest of the way.

The Yellow Jackets threatened in the fourth, but stranded runners on second and third, trailing 3-0 through four innings of play.

BHSU would push a run across in the bottom of the sixth as Gianna Haley led off with a single followed by a double by Tuschen to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Unfortunately, that was all they would get back, eventually falling by that score.

Game Two (W, 6-3)
Tuschen started game two and went six strong innings, allowing only three runs on 11 hits. At the plate she went 1-4 with a single.

Haley had a huge game at the plate, roping a grand slam in the second, and going 2-4 in the game with 5 RBI and a run scored.

Bell Luebken went 3-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Emily Marsden and McKayla Perry each went 2-4 with two runs scored.

With two outs in the second, the Yellow Jackets exploded for four-runs on a grand slam by Haley to drive in Luebken, Perry and Marsden who all reached with two-out singles, giving the team a 4-2 lead through two innings.

From there, Tuschen allowed only one more run the rest of the way, giving BHSU the chance to build on its lead. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the fourth on a Haley RBI single for her fifth RBI on the day, and then went ahead 6-3 in the sixth on a Luebken RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Tuschen allowed the first two batters to reach before Amaral came in to close it out. Amaral got her first batter to pop up to Luebken who threw out the CSU Pueblo baserunner trying to tag up and score for a big double play, as the Yellow Jackets went on to win 6-3.

Up Next
The Yellow Jackets continue at home with doubleheaders against Colorado Mesa on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.
