Black Hills State football opens its 2021 season Thursday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m., taking on Dickinson State at Lyle Hare Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a 2-game, pandemic-shortened season last year, in which they went 0-2 against South Dakota Mines and Colorado Mesa.

Dickinson State
The Blue Hawks are coming off of a 2020 season that saw them finish 9-1 overall, and an undefeated 9-0 in the regular season in the North Star Athletic Association. Dickinson State swept aside its conference opponents in league play to rank 10th in the nation at the NAIA level. The Blue Hawks advanced to the 2020 NAIA Championship Series, where they fell in the first round to No. 6 Northwestern College, 31-7.

Last Meeting
The last time the Yellow Jackets played Dickinson State was on Oct. 29, 2016. BHSU entered the game with a 5-3 record, and went on to defeat the Blue Hawks 33-20 to improve to 6-3 through their first nine games. The Yellow Jackets went on to finish that season with a 7-4 record.

Series History
This will be the 61st meeting between Black Hills State and Dickinson State, having faced off on the gridiron 60 times prior. In those 60 games, the Yellow Jackets hold a 26-32-2 record.

Playing at the NAIA level before transitioning to Division II in 2012, BHSU was a member of the DAC where they were a frequent opponent of Dickinson State. Since entering the RMAC, the two teams have played only once (2016).
