Black Hills State track and field opened the year hosting the Myrle Hanson open Saturday, January 15.
Both the men and women's teams placed second behind Chadron State with a smaller than normal group of student-athletes competing.
Kyla Sawvell bested the provisional mark she set in women's weight throw at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open with a mark of 18.76m (61' 6.75") during competition Saturday.
Sprints/Hurdles
Breanne Fuller earned second place in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash after finishing the 60 with a time of 8.06 and the 200 with a time of 26.67.
Hannah Struble earned a fifth place finish in the women's 60m dash with a time of 8.75. In the 400m dash the Yellow Jackets had the top three finishers with
Erica Dykstra finishing first with a time of 1:03.68,
Taylor Lundquist finishing second with a time of 1:04.68, and
Jillian Brennan coming in third with a time of 1:09.33. On the men's side Conor Mcgraw earned second place in the men's 60m dash with a career best time of 7.16 while
Justin Jumetilco earned fifth with a time of 7.45. In the 200m dash
Frank Becker finished fourth with a time of 24.28 while
Nicholas Hale was close behind finishing in 24.49 and taking fifth. In the men's 400m dash
Frank Becker earned a second place finish with a time of 53.96 while
Landon Nicholson placed third with a time of 55.19.
Conor McGraw earned first in the 60 hurdles with another career best time of 8.67.
Distance
In the men's mile
Levi Smith earned a first place finish for the Yellow Jackets with a 4:42.03 finish while
Addison Red Fox came in second with a time of 4:43.94.
Jumps/Vaults
In the men's high jump
Trevor Brangham placed fourth after jumping 1.74m (5' 8.5"). Freshman
Ben Marowf earned a career best jump of 3.97m (13' 0.25") in the pole vault en route to a second place finish for BHSU.
Conor McGraw continued his day of career bests in the long jump with a mark of 6.13m (20' 1.5") and a fifth place finish.
Throws
BHSU had three of the top five finishers in the women's shot put with
Kyla Sawvell coming out on top with a throw of 14.35m (47' 1"). Freshman
Jadyn Gackle placed second with a mark of 12.06m (39' 7") and freshman
Alexandra Cameron placed fifth with a mark of 11.81m (38' 9"). In the weight throw Kyla's provisional mark of 18.76m earned her a first place finish.
Sully Mack placed second in the men's weight throw with a career best mark of 16.07m (52' 8.75"). Mack also placed third in the shot put with a mark of 13.39m (43' 11.25").
Jasper Caldera earned a fourth place finish in the men's shot put at his first collegiate meet with a mark of 13.32m (43' 8.5").
Relays
The Yellow Jackets had the lone 4x400m relay team with
Erica Dykstra,
Hannah Struble,
Jillian Brennan, and
Taylor Lundquist completed the race with a time of 4:39.52.

The Yellow Jacket track and field teams are back in action next weekend as they are set to host the Dave Little Alumni Mile Friday, January 21 and Saturday, January 22.
