LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Black Hills State women's basketball defeated Colorado Christian University 70-59 Friday night on the road in Lakewood.

It was a tale of two halves in Lakewood Friday night as the Yellow Jackets (11-7, 9-3 RMAC) opened the night slow on offense against the Mountain Lions before a booming second half gave BHSU the road victory.

The team split defensive efforts tallying 33 total rebounds. Danica Kocer led the team with 4 total rebounds while Niki Van Wyk snagged four critical steals.

It was the Mountain Lions who struck first Friday night taking a two-point lead on a layup in the first minute of play. Although BHSU would get a one-point lead with just over seven minutes to play in the quarter it was the Mountain Lions who held the lead throughout much of the quarter. The Yellow Jackets were outscored 15-10 from that point with the Mountain Lions taking a 19-15 lead over BHSU to end the quarter.

The second quarter brought evenly matched play from the Yellow Jackets and Mountain Lions. BHSU took a two-point lead with seven minutes to play in the quarter but ended up trialing the Mountain Lions from that point after being outscored 14-7 to round out the half setting up a 33-28 score in favor of CCU at the break.

The Yellow Jackets came out blazing in the third quarter outscoring the Mountain Lions 4-0 to open the quarter cutting the CCU lead to one at 33-32. From that point CCU would hold onto a lead over the Yellow Jackets until a Morgan Hammerbeck layup at 3:42 would knot things up at 41 all. From that point on the Yellow Jackets would keep their foot on the gas outscoring the Mountain Lions 15-7 taking a 54-48 lead into the final ten minutes of play.

BHSU was relentless in the fourth quarter taking their largest lead of the night behind a Danica Kocer layup at the 6:37 mark making it 64-53 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. From there BHSU and CCU would trade baskets with the Yellow Jackets staying in control setting up the final score 70-59.
