Football Ready to Face No. 9/18 Colorado Mines

Black Hills State football heads to Golden, Colo. to take on the No. 9/18 Colorado Mines on Saturday, Oct. 22 at noon.

BHSU is currently 5-2 to start the season and received votes last week on the Week 6 AFCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll for just the second time in program history, and the first time since Oct 10, 2016. The team now looks to make it a 7-2 start to the season for the first time since 1982.

The Yellow Jackets currently sit third in the RMAC standings, allowing only 21.0 points per game which is good for second in the league. The BHSU defense has surrendered 18 touchdowns and seven field goals up to this point in the season.

The offense is fifth in the RMAC averaging 28.1 points per game while having scored 26 touchdowns and kicking six field goals.

Colorado Mines
After advancing to the NCAA semifinal game last season, the Orediggers sit atop the RMAC standings with a perfect 5-0 conference record and 5-2 overall. CSM's two losses have come against ranked opponents, falling to No. 5 Grand Valley State, 25-22 on Sept. 1, and No. 7 Angelo State, 30-27 on Sept. 10.

CSM leads the RMAC offensively, scoring 45.6 per game, and defensively, allowing only 18.9 per game. The team's rushing averages 175.3 yards per game, having scored 19 touchdowns this season, to lead the league. They also lead in rush defense, allowing only 90.3 yards per game. Their passing offense and defense each rank second int he RMAC, averaging 311.1 passing yards per game, while allowing only 210.0.

Series History
Black Hills State is 0-9 all-time against CSM dating back to the 2012 season.

League Leaders
Nolan Susel ranks second in the RMAC with 10 total touchdowns this season and total rushing touchdowns (9). He also sits third in total rushing yards (455), second in rushing attempts (107), and fourth in rushing yards per game (65.0).

Receiving, Hasaan Williams ranks third in the RMAC in receptions per game with (6.3) and total receptions (44), while ranking seventh in receiving yards (439) and eighth in receiving yards per game (62.7). Williams is tied for seventh in receiving touchdowns with four.

Redshirt freshman receiver TJ Chukwurah is currently averaging 19.3 yards per catch, good for fourth in the RMAC.

Special teams has also been a bright spot this season, as redshirt freshman kicker Coleman Chapman is tied for fourth in the RMAC with six field goals this season, and ranks tied for 13th in the RMAC in all offensive scoring with 41 points scored this season.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets have three of the top-10 in the RMAC among passes defended. Lovenski Simon is second in the RMAC with nine breakups this season, Deunte Moody is fourth with seven, and Doodles Quinones is tied for seventh with five.

Klaus Souffrant is also in the mix with four breakups on defense. Souffrant's three interceptions this season also ranks third in the RMAC.

Aaron Thiele ranks fourth in the conference with 53 total tackles this season, and fifth with 7.6 tackles per game.

RMAC Honors
Week 2, 9/12
Linebacker Ryder Blair was named Defensive Player of the Week and kicker Coleman Chapman earned Special Teams Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Week 3, 9/19
Sophomore linebacker Aaron Thiele was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Week 4, 9/26
Redshirt freshman kicker Coleman Chapman was named RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his second time this season.

National Rankings
Black Hills State football received votes on the Week 6 AFCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll on Oct. 10 for just the second time in program history, and the first time since Oct 10, 2016 - exactly 6 years prior to the day - which also happened to be during a week leading up to a matchup with Western Colorado.
