The Black Hills State track and field teams debuted their 2022-23 indoor season on Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Holiday open, with both BHSU squads placing third overall.
The men placed third with 71.5 points on the day while Chadron State claimed first place with 195. South Dakota Mines placed second with 108.5 and Rocky Mountain College placed fourth with 18.
In the women's field, Chadron State took the first-place finish with 166 points while South Dakota Mines took second with 83, leaving BHSU to third with 44 points.
Sprints/Hurdles
In the men's 60m dash,
Mason Sartain, who qualified in the prelims with a second-place finish (7.09), found a first place finish in the finals with a final time of 7.05 seconds. On the women's side,
Abby Goeble (8.67) and
Ava Dinger (8.82) completed the 60m dash in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the women's 200m dash, Goeble ran a sixth-place time of 28.63 seconds while
Evie Boyd ran the 400m dash for BHSU and placed second after clocking out a 1:13.39 time.
Relays
In the 4x400m relay, Sartain,
Nathaniel Fitzpatrick,
Shane McGraw, and
Trinity Brady led BHSU to a second-place finish with a 3:26.90 time while
Sophie Curtis,
Kaylee Terry,
Kendall Tietjen, and
Mikayla Tracy led BHSU to a first-place finish in 4:14.82.
Distance
In the 3000m run, BHSU filled the field with
Justyn France (9:09.81), Reece Charest (9:18.59),
Levi Smith (9:20.89),
Braik Hurm (9:21.86), and
Marcos Valerio (9:23.21).
Jumps/Vaults
Ryan Foy represented BHSU in the pole vault, placing third with a 4.10m vault while
Reece Ullery placed third in the long jump with a 6.35-meter distance. In the women's long jump, Dinger recorded a third-place finish with a 4.47-meter jump.
Throws
In the tough throwing field represented this year,
Makayla Friederich led BHSU with a sixth-place shot put of 11.53 meters.
Hanah Sullivan (10.83m) and
Christianna Wall (10.18m) both held 10
th and 12
th place in the shot put.
Friederich threw for the women's weight throw and finished in fourth with a 14.97m throw while Sullivan threw a 12.70m weight that put her in 10
th, with Wall rounding out the Yellow Jacket throwers in 12
th, throwing 11.62m.
For the men's shot put,
Matthew Lofaso led BHSU with an eighth-place 12.16m throw with
Reece Ullery (12.06m) and
Conor McGraw (11.90m) in tow with 10
th and 12
th place finishes, respectively.
Sully Mack had a solid outing in the weight throws as he led BHSU with a second-place throw of 17.42m.
Anthony Rosenstrauch threw 13.63m to place in ninth and Lofaso rounded out the Yellow Jackets with a 9.74m throw to place 15
th.
