Yellow Jackets Score a Season High 74 Points, Defeat Cowgirls 74-55

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Black Hills State women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep on the road as they defeated New Mexico Highlands 74-55.

The Yellow Jackets (15-8, 13-4 RMAC) tallied a season high of 74 points and move up to tied for fourth place in the RMAC standing after defeating the Cowgirls.

Morgan Hammerbeck led the offensive attack for the Yellow Jackets recording a career-high 18 points Saturday night while also pulling in three boards.

Danica Kocer also tallied double digits in scoring recording 14 points, five steals, and five rebounds.

Ashlee Beacom protected the ball well for the Yellow Jackets, snagged three steals, and pulled in 11 boards on the night.

The Yellow Jackets offense took control of the game early going on a 7-0 run to open the first quarter of action. The Cowgirls got on the board with a layup at the 7:55 mark before Morgan Hammerbeck went on a seven-point run of her own to give BHSU a 14-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets and Cowgirls stayed close offensively from that point setting up a score of 22-8 in favor of BHSU at the end of the quarter.

The Cowgirls found some answers in the second quarter as they came out of the break hot from beyond the arc shooting 75% from downtown. It was this sharp shooting that would allow NMHU to shave the Yellow Jacket lead down to seven with 1:43 left to play in the half. Danica Kocer would complete a three-point play at the 1:18 mark to set up the halftime score of 35-25 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

Out of the break the Yellow Jacket offense was suffocating going on a 9-2 run to open the quarter. The Cowgirls again stayed competitive through three-point shots earning a 66.7% average from beyond the arc. However, the Cowgirls shooting from beyond the arc couldn't stifle a dominant Yellow Jacket offense as the team would take its largest lead of the night, 19 points, at the 3:29 mark on a Raven Cournoyer three. The Yellow Jackets held a 54-38 lead as they took the court for the final ten minutes of regulation.

Although the Cowgirls would battle hard throughout the last quarter the 19 point deficit would prove to be too much for NMHU to overcome as the Yellow Jackets took another road victory winning 74-55.

BHSU shot 43.1% from the floor making 28 of 65 attempts and 26.3% from beyond the arc making 10 of 38 shots.

The Yellow Jackets shot a season best 100% from the free throw line making all eight free throws they were awarded.
