LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Black Hills State softball split Friday's doubleheader with New Mexico Highlands Friday afternoon as the offense exploded for 14 runs in game two.
The Yellow Jackets are now 1-1 overall and in the RMAC after a 14-2 win in game two and a 7-2 game one loss.
Bell Luebken had a monster day at the plate, going 6-8 with a 3-run home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
Shayla Tuschen also had a big day, with a pair of home runs in game two, totaling six RBI on the day while also earning the win in the circle in game two.
Fallyn Marshall went 3-7 with four runs scored and
Tyler Whitlock went 3-6.
Game One (L, 7-2)
The Yellow Jacket offense played will in game one gave themselves plenty of chances on the basepaths in game one, but wouldn't push a run across until the seventh inning when the team scored a pair after loading the bases.
In the final inning of play, BHSU took advantage of a sacrifice fly with the bags packed, and then a Cowboy error to plate two in the frame.
Bell Luebken tallied three hits in the game while Fallyn Marshal and
Tyler Whitlock each had two and a run scored.
Breanne Henricksen and
Shayla Tuschen drove in the two runs in the seventh inning.
Game Two (W, 14-2)
BHSU scored early in game two with two runs in each the first and second inning. In the first, a Luebken triple drove in Marshall before
Shayla Tuschen double pushed Luebken home to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead through one.
The next inning,
Hailey Franklin and Marshal both reached base for
Lizzy Johnson to plate them both with a double, extending the lead to 4-0 in the second.
NMHU would get a pair back in the bottom half of the inning, but a 2-run homer by Tuschen in the third made it a 6-2 game to put the lead back to four.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on some more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
Crystal Amaral to drive in Johnson to extend the lead to 7-2. One batter later, Tuschen went deep for her second time in the game, scoring Luebken and making it a 9-2 ballgame.
BHSU played add-on from there as a Luebken 3-run shot and an Amaral solo blast helped the team put up a 5-spot in the fifth to take a 14-2 lead.
All nine Yellow Jackets recorded a hit in game two, while finishing with 15 hits, eight for extra bases and four home runs as a team.
Tuschen went yard twice while earning the win in the circle.

The Yellow Jackets play two more at NMHU on Saturday before they're scheduled to host UCCS for doubleheaders on Saturday, March 5 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., and Sunday, March 6 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
