COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Black Hills State softball played toe-to-toe with UCCS Friday afternoon, dropping its double headers 6-5 and 7-5.
The Yellow Jackets (2-4, 2-4 RMAC) totaled 10 runs on the day while slugging three home runs.
Lizzy Johnson went 5-7 on the day, scoring two runs while driving in one and walking once.
Bayleigh Hubbard had a huge game one, going 2-4 with a three-run home run.
Whitlock finished 3-6 with a double and a run scored.
Crystal Amaral started game one in the circle, lasting 6 innings and striking out sevend while tossing 132 pitches. In game two she went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored with a home run.
Game One (L, 6-5)
After UCCS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, BHSU answered quickly in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs of their own on a Hubbard two RBI single to even the score at 2-2 through one.
Amaral would keep the Mountain Lions scoreless over the next two innings of play until the top of the 4th when a UCCS solo home run put them back ahead 3-2.
UCCS added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 6-2 lead.
In the Yellow Jackets' final at-bats, a Tuschen single and Haley double put two on before Hubbard smacked a 3-run home run to pull BHSU to within one, 6-5. It would be too late, though, and BHSU would fall 6-5.
Game Two (L, 7-5)
Tuschen struck out the side to open the game, but UCCS put up two runs in the top of the second to take an early lead.
In the bottom half, Tuschen helped herself out with a leadoff solo shot to cut the lead in half.
UCCS would go up 5-1 in the third before BHSU put up one in the bottom half, making it a 5-2 game.
With UCCS leading 7-3 in the fifth, Amaral hit a 2-run homer to keep BHSU within striking distance, down 7-5 going into the sixth.
That score would hold down the stretch and go final, 7-5.
