DURANGO, Colo. – Black Hills State softball fell to Fort Lewis in their doubleheader on Saturday, 6-4 and 10-4.
The Yellow Jackets (10-26, 8-26 RMAC) tallied eighteen hits on the day, including six doubles.
Game One (L, 6-4)
Despite giving up a solo home run in the first,
Crystal Amaral was sharp in the circle, striking out three over her first two innings.
With the Yellow Jackets down 1-0,
Shayla Tuschen and
Tyler Whitlock led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles. A
Hailey Franklin HBP would load the bases before
MiKayla Johnson drew a walk to force home a run and even the score at 1-1.
Amaral put up a scoreless third and fourth inning before the Skyhawks pushed across five runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, a
Lizzy Johnson single and
Gianna Haley walk were followed by an Amaral RBI double and a Tuschen RBI groundout to cut the BHSU deficit to 6-3 through five innings of play.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth from Mikayla and
Lizzy Johnson drew the Yellow Jackets closer, making it a 6-4 game.
BHSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh by putting two on but wouldn't capitalize to eventually fall 6-4 in game one.
Game Two (L, 10-4)
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first with a run after singles from
Lizzy Johnson and
Gianna Haley.
Tuschen held the FLC bats quiet through the first three innings, but the Skyhawks used a 4-run fourth and a 4-run fifth to take an 8-1 lead.
BHSU hung around, though, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth behind doubles from
Taylor Dowden,
Lizzy Johnson and
Fallyn Marshall to make it an 8-4 game.
The Skyhawks tacked on two more runs in the sixth, and would eventually win 10-4.

The Yellow Jackets play two more against Fort Lewis on Sunday, April 24 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. BHSU will wrap up their 2022 campaign next weekend as they travel to Colorado Mines for doubleheaders on Friday, April 29 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., and Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
