GOLDEN, Colo. – Black Hills State softball dominated on offense during their Saturday doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines.
The Yellow Jackets (13-29, 11-29 RMAC) would take both of Saturday's games in dominating fashion, finishing the series against Colorado School of Mines 3-1. They would finish out Saturday's double header matchup with 14 total runs, 12 RBIs, 17 hits, and three home runs. Six Yellow Jackets finished with at least one recorded RBI.
Crystal Amaral would tally up four hits, four RBIs, one scored run and a home run. She also pitched all seven innings of game one, totaling 89 pitches and six strikeouts.
Fallyn Marshall would finish the afternoon on three hits, three RBIs and three total scored runs on the day.
Game One (W, 6-1)
Game one would start with both pitching mounds allowing zero hits until the bottom of the third, when Colorado Mines hit a double to right field. The runner advanced to third, but the Yellow Jackets stopped them from scoring with a clutch fly-out to leave two of their runners on base.
The hit column would start to fill up for both teams in the fourth inning, leading off with a
Shayla Tuschen single home run launched down left field to put the Yellow Jackets on top 1-0. Colorado Mines would heat up in the bottom half of the frame with two hits and a run to respond, tying the game at 1-1.
Things would ramp up for the Yellow Jacket offense in the top of the fifth: a two RBI triple to left center from Marshall and an RBI single from
Gianna Haley would extend the lead of the Yellow Jackets to 4-1. The Orediggers would lack a response, only recording one hit before the Black Hills State defense would send the game to the sixth inning.Â
The Yellow Jackets kept their bats red-hot at the top of the sixth, with a
Bayleigh Hubbard two RBI homerun down the infield line to put them on top 6-1. Aside from a double to left center from Colorado Mines, Amaral would continue to keep the Oredigger bats at bay. The Yellow Jackets would hold them down with two left on base at the bottom of the seventh, securing the victory for game one.
Game Two (W, 8-2)
Black Hills State would tack their first run on an Amaral RBI single at the top of the first inning, putting the Yellow Jackets at an early lead of 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets would get hot in inning two and would score six more runs with 4 hits, two walks, and a two-run homer.
A double from
Tyler Whitlock and a pair of walks from
Hailey Franklin and
Taylor Dowden would load bases and set up a pair of RBI singles from
Lizzy Johnson and Marshall to go up 3-0. Haley would crank another hit out to left field and advance to third on a fielding error, sending two more home to go up 5-0. Their half of the inning was capped off with a two-run homer from Amaral to increase their lead to 7-0. Colorado Mines would have players on first and second base at the bottom of the second, but a double-play from Marshall and Amaral would kill the momentum for the Orediggers offense.Â
A walk and series of hits at the top of the third would put up one more run for the Yellow Jackets to expand the lead to 8-0. Colorado Mines would finally answer at the bottom of the fifth by putting up a run of their own on a walk and an RBI double to make the score 8-1.
Colorado Mines would add another run at the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the score to 8-2, and although they kept the Yellow Jackets to zero runs at the top of the seventh, the Orediggers were unable to put up any more runs in their half of the last frame, giving BHSU the victory in game two.
