PUEBLO, Colo. - At the end of the RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships the Yellow Jackets look back on a successful three-day event and an even more successful outdoor season.
"The 2022 outdoor season was a difficult one in many respects," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "From fighting the weather, to cancelled meets, to changing the conference venue two days before it was to begin. Despite all of this, the men's and women's teams performed exceptionally well the past three days down here in Pueblo, Colorado. It was a great way to end the outdoor campaign's for both squads! We are looking forward to moving some of our individual national hopefuls through the month of May, ending up in Allendale, MI at the national championships."
The women's team was able to record 79 total points throughout the three-day event placing fourth as a team after initially being picked to finish seventh. The men recorded 49 points earning a seventh-place team finish after initially being picked to finish eighth in the RMAC Preseason Poll.
Throughout the three-day meet the Yellow Jackets had four Conference Champions, two school records broken, two student athletes earn new provisional marks, and 20 student athletes earn All-Conference accolades.
Friday afternoon
Breanne Fuller took the track to compete in the prelims of the women's 100m dash with her sights set on an advancement to the finals which were to be run on Sunday. Not only did Fuller accomplish that goal, but she also broke the school record in the process. Fuller ran an 11.76 100m dash which broke the school record of 11.91 which she had set in 2021. Fuller's time of 11.76 Friday afternoon also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this month.
Saturday
Gevin Paas took to the throwing circle to compete in the men's discus. Paas had previously recorded a toss in the discus just centimeters shy of the school record before shattering the nine-year-old record of 162' 11" Saturday afternoon with a mark of 165' 03".
The Yellow Jackets also had three student-athletes win their events Friday and Saturday leading up to championship Sunday with
Kyla Sawvell placing first in the weight throw on Friday with a mark of 60.18m (197' 05") winning the event by more than 20 feet,
Conor McGraw coming out on top in the decathlon with a points total of 6272 beating out second place by 31 points, and
Keith Osowski taking first in the steeplechase by more than a three second margin.
Throughout prelims BHSU had five athletes earn a spot in finals on Sunday
Keith Osowski took the track first for the 1500m run finals and earned a fifth-place finish and Second Team All-Conference with a time of 3:53.82. Next on the track was
Breanne Fuller competing in the women's 100m dash. Fuller placed fourth also earning Second Team All-Conference with a time of 11.86.
Erica Dykstra was next to take the track after qualifying for the 800m run finals on Saturday. Dykstra brought home a fourth-place finish and Second Team All-Conference after finishing the race in 2:13.92.
Sophie Curtis recorded a fifth-place finish and earned a spot on the Second Team All-Conference squad in the women's 400 hurdles after completing the race in 1:04.99. The last Yellow Jacket to take the track alone on Sunday was
Breanne Fuller who had also qualified to run in the 200m dash finals. Fuller placed fifth with a time of 24.53 which earned her another Second Team All-Conference spot.
The Yellow Jackets had three relays run on Sunday with the men's 4x100 starting the day on the track off. The BHSU 4x100 earned a fifth-place finish after completing the race in 42.61. The men who ran on the 4x100 team were
Frank Becker,
Nicholas Hale,
Shane McGraw, and
Mason Sartain. The meet wrapped up with the 4x400's. The Yellow Jackets had both a men's and women's 4x400 team compete. The women took the track first placing ninth with a time of 4:02.08. The women who ran were
Hannah Hendrick,
Sophie Curtis,
Erica Dykstra, and
Mikayla Tracy. The men's team closed out the meet placing seventh with a time of 3:24.50. The men who ran included
Frank Becker,
Mason Sartain, Coleman Chapman, and
Shane McGraw.
Field events began bright and early Sunday with the women's pole vault, which had been postponed from Friday, and the women's triple jump.
Hannah Hendrick earned First Team All-Conference in the women's pole vault after vaulting 3.91m (12' 10") and placing third while
Whitney Scott earned Second Team All-Conference after clearing 3.71m (12' 02") and placing fifth. Breanna Paul competed in the triple jump for BHSU placing 13th with a mark of 10.10m (33' 01.75").
The women's shot put got underway at 9:45 where the Yellow Jackets had four athletes competing.
Kyla Sawvell placed first overall and was named the RMAC shot put Champion with a mark of 14.09m (46' 02.75"). Sawvell bested the second-place finisher by nearly three feet in one of her best events.
Alexandra Cameron brought home a Second Team All-Conference finish after earning a mark of 12.21m (40' 00.75").
Makayla Friederich earned a tenth-place finish with a toss of 11.89m (39' 00.25") and
Jadyn Gackle placed 20th with a mark of 11.28m (37' 00.25").
Both the women and the men compete in the javelin on Sunday with
Sully Mack placing third and being named First Team All-Conference in the javelin with a mark of 53.61m (175' 11") and
Reece Ullery placing 20th with a mark of 40.50m (132' 10"). For the women it was
Kyla Sawvell who led the Yellow Jackets coming in sixth and earning Second Team All-Conference with personal best toss of 34.94m (114' 07").
Kitrie Frank was close behind placing seventh with a mark of 34.56m (113' 05").
At 11:30
Mario Guerrero took to the triple jumping pit placing 12th with a jump of 13.60m (44' 07.50").

The Yellow Jackets will be competing in the coming weekends as tune up meets for the 2022 NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships which are being held in Allendale, Michigan May 26-28.
