Black Hills State football will head 45 minutes east to take on South Dakota Mines on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. in the 137th Black Hills Brawl which will feature the current top two teams in the RMAC.
BHSU is currently first place in the RMACÂ with a 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 1970 when the team finished the 8-2 as SDIC Champions. The team now looks to make it a 5-0 start to the season, something the BHSU football program has not done since the 1951 season when the team finished 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets currently sit first among RMAC teams, allowing only 18.0 points per game. The BHSU defense has surrendered only nine touchdowns and three field goals up to this point in the season.
The offense is third in the RMAC averaging 29.5 points per game while having scored 15 touchdowns (third in RMAC) and kicking five field goals (first).
South Dakota Mines
The Hardrockers are 3-1 so far in 2022 and sit in second place in the RMAC standings after defeating Missouri S&T on Sept. 1, Colorado Mesa on Sept. 17 and New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 24.
SDSMT is currently second in the RMAC with an offense that is scoring 33.8 points per game, totaling 18 touchdowns (second in RMAC) and four field goals (t-second). Defensively, they rank third with a 22.8 points-against average.
Series History
This will be the 137th Black Hills Brawl, continuing one of the longest running NCAA rivalries in the nation. BHSU is 60-65-11 all time in the series, first playing in 1900, but 27-12 over the Hardrockers since 1987
Currently at 136 games, the Black Hills Brawl between Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines is the most played rivalry series at the NCAA DII level, and fourth-most in any division nationwide behind Lafayette vs. Lehigh (157 games), Yale vs. Princeton (143) and Yale vs. Harvard (137).
League Leaders
Nolan Susel ranks second in the RMAC with seven total touchdowns this season, and also sits in second in total rushing yards (342), rushing yards per game (85.5), rushing attempts (70) and rushing touchdowns (6).
Receiving,
Hasaan Williams leads the RMAC in receptions per game with (7.5) and total receptions (30), while ranking fourth in receiving yards (344) and receiving yards per game (86.0). Williams also has the second-most receiving touchdowns in the league with four.
Redshirt freshman receiver
TJ Chukwurah is currently averaging 24.5 yards per catch, good for second in the RMAC.
Special teams has also been a bright spot this season, as redshirt freshman kicker
Coleman Chapman leads the league with five field goals this season, and ranks sixth in the RMAC in all offensive scoring with 28 points scored this season.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets have three of the top-10 in the RMAC among passes defended.
Lovenski Simon leads the league with seven breakups this season,
Klaus Souffrant is tied for second with six broken up passes, and
Deunte Moody is tied for sixth with five this season.
Souffrant's two interceptions this season also ranks him tied for third in the RMAC.
Aaron Thiele ranks fourth in the conference with 30 total tackles this season, and seventh with 7.5 tackles per game.
