Yellow Jacket Ladies Take Down No. 24 Regis, 64-54

DENVER, Colo. – Black Hills State women's basketball once again pulled through in the second half after taking down the No. 24 Regis Rangers by ten on Friday night.

After a close first half that saw both squads head to the locker room with Regis up, 32-31, BHSU recorded a 21-point frame in the opening period of the second half to lift BHSU to victory over the Rangers.

The Yellow Jackets (4-1, 1-0 RMAC) finished 44.3 percent from the floor, making 5-of-12 from the three-point band and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Regis, who came into the contest averaging 72.8 points per contest, were held to 54 on the night and 27 percent shooting.

Ellie Moore led the Yellow Jacket scores against Regis, posting 12 points on six shots of 11 on the floor. She led the team with a season high three blocks on defense, along with a steal and three defensive boards.

Gracie Haneborg was the next double-digit scorer for BHSU as she reigned in 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting, including a made three-ball on three attempts from range. Morgan Hammerbeck played a quiet game against Regis, cashing in nine points on a 50 percent shooting clip from the field and the charity stripe, each, tied Kalla Bertram for the team-lead of eight rebounds, and recorded one assist and steal.

Off the bench, Raven Cournoyer and Alessia Capley each recorded nine points in the game, with Capley leading the shots with a 4-of-7 look on the floor and a made three-point jumper. Cournoyer led from the charity stripe in the tail end of the game, going 3-of-4 in the fourth quarter to help seal the deal for BHSU.

The ladies got rolling right away in the first, with a spinning Bertram dish and three ball from Haneborg giving BHSU the first go-ahead lead of the night, 5-2. Though a three ball from Erin Fry and a pair of layups from the Rangers pulled the gap to an 11-9 scoreboard, two-point shots from Kaycee Groves and Alessia Capley put BHSU up by four later in the frame. Another layup from Regis, however, paired with a last-second three pointer gave Regis a 14-13 scoreboard after the opening period.

After traded buckets kicked off the second quarter, a trey from Regis' Athena Saragoza separated the Rangers once again, which paired with a scooping layup to put them in front by five, 22-17. A layup from Bertram closed in on the Rangers once again, with a Bertram steal leading to a three-point play from Haneborg that tied the game at 22-apiece, later adding up to 10 unanswered BHSU points to lead 27-22 with 5:14 to go in the half. The Rangers continued to get looks from range, however, as another long-ball and pair of free throws notched another tie at 27-all. A three from Regis inside the final minute gave them another three-point lead, but a Capley layup reset the game to a one-point, Regis lead at the horn.

The opening period of the second half was the difference maker for the Yellow Jackets: BHSU held Regis to 11 points in the frame and 26.7 percent from the floor while dropping 21 on the rangers, shooting 47.4 percent overall and nailing three of four attempted three-point shots.

BHSU and Regis traded two-point buckets through the first couple of minutes, but long-ranged daggers from Ostenson and Capley pushed the Yellow Jackets to a 41-36 lead. Cournoyer got in on the shooting clinic with another triple with 4:36 to go, pairing with a layup from Capley to set the score to an eight-point, 46-38 BHSU lead. The Rangers continued to put shots up through the remainder of the frame but could not connect, sending the game to the final period with BHSU on top by nine.

A trey from Regis opened scoring in the fourth and held up as the only score up to the 5:03 mark, where the Rangers stretched to a 5-0 run on a two-point jumper. Groves responded with an off-the-glass jump shot at the top of the key to maintain the BHSU lead, with layups from Haneborg and Moore running up a 6-2 surge for the Yellow Jackets as the game closed in on the final minute. Following a series of fouls and turnovers from both sides of the ball, free throws from Cournoyer and Hammerbeck helped post the final scoreboard. A last-ditch three-point jumper from the Rangers bounced off, allowing Haneborg to haul in the defensive board to close the game.
