The Donald E. Young Center Fieldhouse played host for the 2023 Yellow Jacket Holiday Open on Saturday morning, with Black Hills State track and field debuting the season with five champions at the meet.
"We started the season on a high note," said Track and Field Head Coach,
Austin Billings. "As a staff, I think we were all very pleased to see our newcomers shine so brightly at their first showing. This team has a lot of drive and commitment to their craft. I know we are eager to get back to practice so we can continue to fine tune and prep for a long season."
MEN
The men's 4x400 relay team enjoyed success at the Holiday Open, with
Brett Glaser,
Braden Anderson, Logan Boyd, and
Mason Sartain leading the way for the Yellow Jackets to finish first in the event with a 3:36.61 finishing time.
Anderson also ran in the 600m race earlier in the day and secured another first-place finish for the Yellow Jacket men after clocking out at 1:22.77.
Mason Sartain, who ran in the 60m dash, finished in third after posting a 6.98 dash time. Sartain was also joined by
Jace Johnson (7.14) and
Brendan Flock (7.18) in the 60m finals as both men finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the field events,
Sully Mack made his season debut with a second-place, 17.51m weight throw that landed the graduate in second place. Making their collegiate debut in the pole vault,
Lane Longbrake and
Owen Wentz cleared 3.85m in Saturday's meet.
WOMEN
Sophomore thrower and previous All-RMAC thrower,
Hanah Sullivan, dominated throws in the Young Center Fieldhouse as the 5-foot-7 Wyoming native launched first place throws in both the weight throw (15.13m) and shot put (12.59m). Makayla Frederich held her own in the shot put as well, throwing an 11.93m shot put to land in third.
In the women's 600m race, sophomore
Kendall Tietjen posted a personal record performance of 1:42.45 in the race, beating out her opponent by nearly 20 seconds.
At the Holiday Open women's long jump,
Alivia Weathers finished second with a 4.94m leap, which only fell short of the first-place winner by 0.02m (3/4 of an inch).
