Black Hills State women's basketball hosted their turnaround rematch against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Friday night from the Donald E. Young Center, defeating the Skyhawks 70-48 to complete their season sweep of Fort Lewis.
Â
The Yellow Jackets completed the game with a 23-of-58 (39.7 percent) shot outlook from the floor, 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) from beyond the arc, and 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the charity stripe. BHSU held a solid defensive night with seven steals and three blocks while nabbing 31 defensive boards (40 total).
Â
The leading scorer for BHSU was
Danica Kocer as she held 14 points in her 23 minutes on the hardwood. She was 5-of-10 from the floor, 3-of-7 from three, and 1-of-3 at the free throw line. Kocer also held a team-leading seven rebounds on the night.
Â
Niki Van Wyk was the other double-digit scorer for BHSU as she racked up 13 against Fort Lewis. She was 4-of-11 in shooting including 2-of-7 from downtown and 3-of-4 on her free throws. Van Wyk also recorded an assist and a steal on the night with four defensive boards.
Tough BHSU defense created three Skyhawk turnovers to start the game, which helped BHSU hop in front on an early 5-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets held the Skyhawks to only one more layup while laying down nine of their own to lead 16-4 by the end of one.
Â
FLC opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to catch up with the Yellow Jackets, bringing the scoreboard to 18-10 with 7:23 to go in the half. However, a technical foul on the Skyhawks gave Engesser two freebies to keep the eight-point gap intact. BHSU stayed hot on offense, commanding the rest of the quarter on a 15-5 stretch to lead 38-17 at halftime.
Â
The Yellow Jackets were back on the pedal at the start of the second half as Van Wyk and Moore reintroduced BHSU with a trey and layup, respectively, to go up 43-17 inside the first few minutes of the new half. Fort Lewis was able to strum up a 6-2 run down the stretch, but BHSU went on the attack once again with a 9-2 run to end the quarter on top 57-25.
Â
Once again, a 6-2 run gave the Skyhawks a strong start in the final quarter, shrinking the gap to 28 off a pair of three-pointers from Tayla Nez and Brooke McGee. Fort Lewis lit up and brought their run to 15-4 across the halfway point in the quarter, drawing closer to BHSU at a 62-40 scoreboard.
Â
Despite the Skyhawks' best quarter of the game, which saw them outscore BHSU 23-13, the Yellow Jackets went on to win by a 22 point, 70-48 score to complete the sweep over Fort Lewis.
