GOLDEN, Colo. – Black Hills State softball dropped its season opener doubleheader to Colorado School of Mines Sunday afternoon, 8-0 in game one and 12-6 in game two.
The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) scattered nine hits in game two after only mustering one hit in game one.
Shayla Tuschen tossed 5 innings in game one, allowing only two earned runs while striking out one. Also in game one,
Shylee Moxey finished 1-2 with a single.
Gianna Haley and Tuschen both went 2-4 with a double in game two. Haley had an RBI and a run scored while Tuschen finished with two RBI and two runs.
Adreanna Lance went 2-4 with an RBI in game two, while
Kayla Lee,
Tyler Whitlock and
Lily Simmons each also registered hits. Lee scored a pair of runs and Whitlock totaled one run scored.
Game One (L, 8-0)
After a Moxey single in the first inning, the Yellow Jacket bats fell quiet. In the circle, Tuschen held the Orediggers to three runs on five hits over her first three innings of work.
A big fifth inning for CSM pushed their lead to 8-0, which would hold to be the final score.
Game Two (L, 12-6)
The Yellow Jacket offense turned things around in game two, as a Lee single followed by back-to-back doubles from Haley and Tuschen gave the team an early 2-0 lead in the first. A Lance single helped BHSU hold a 4-0 advantage to start the game.
CSM answered, though, scoring four of their own in the bottom half of the first to even the score at 4-all through one.
Down 6-4 in the top of the third, singles from Tuschen, Lance and
Taylor Klein loaded the bases before a Simmons sacrifice fly brought the Yellow Jackets within a run, 6-5.
The Orediggers stretched their lead to 9-5 in the third using five hits. BHSU got one back in the top of the fourth on a Tuschen RBI groundout, making it 9-6.
CSM wasn't done, however, pushing three more across in the fifth to eventually win 12-6.
