GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Black Hills State softball dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader to Colorado Mesa, 10-1 and 22-1.
The Yellow Jackets (0-6, 0-6 RMAC) struggled to contain a potent CMU offense, but tallied 10 hits of their own on the day.
Game One (L, 10-1)
Shylee Moxey went 2-3 in game one with a double and a run scored.
Kayla Lee also finished 2-3 while
Ashlynn Pauwels went 1-2 with a double.
Shayla Tuschen drove in the Yellow Jackets' lone run with a sacrifice fly. She also put up 3.0 innings of work in the circle, allowing six earned runs on eight hits while striking out one.
After a quiet first inning, Colorado Mesa struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the top of the third as singles from Moxey and Lee, followed by a
Gianna Haley bunt to move them over, set up a sacrifice fly from Tuschen to bring in Moxey and make it 2-1.
The Mavericks began to pile on from there, though, using a four-run bottom of the third and fourth to eventually win 10-1.
Game Two (L, 22-1)
Tuschen drove in a run, going 1-2, while Moxey went 2-3 with a run scored and a steal.
Taylor Dowden and
Malia Ogee also recorded hits in the game.
The Yellow Jackets got their first two batters on base before Haley moved them over and Tuschen drove them in, taking advantage of a Mesa error to hold an early 1-0 lead.
CMU would even things up, 1-1, in the bottom half of the frame and tack on four more in the second to take a 5-1 lead through two.
A 15-run bottom of the third from the Mavericks put the game out of reach as CMU went on to win, 22-1.
