Yellow Jackets Set to Invade O’Harra Stadium for 139th Black Hills Brawl

SPEARFISH, S.D. – NCAA Division II's most played rivalry is set to be renewed on Saturday evening when the Black Hills State University football team makes their way down I-90 to meet South Dakota Mines for the 139th meeting of the Black Hills Brawl. The Yellow Jackets will look to reclaim the Homestake Trophy in enemy territory for the second consecutive time at O'Harra Stadium as the Yellow Jackets and Hardrockers are set to battle it out at 5 p.m. in Rapid City.

BLACK HILLS STATE STORYLINES
  • Black Hills State enters the RMAC road contest with a record of 2-2 (1-1 RMAC), following a 52-24 loss at No. 4/7 Colorado School of Mines.
  • BHSU is averaging 23.8 points per game with 235.8 passing and 83.3 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average of 319.0 yards of total offense through four games. The Yellow Jacket offense has scored seven touchdowns through the air and six on the ground during the season.
  • Duby has been the primary quarterback for BHSU this season, completing 80-of-137 passes for 920 yards and seven touchdowns while throwing two interceptions.
  • Cameron Goods and Navarre Dixon III have been the featured running backs in a by committee system, rushing for 145 and 78 yards respectively this season. Both players have found the end zone on two occasions.
  • Kelby Olson and Damien Boozer have been the top targets among receivers, totaling a team-leading 167 and 152 yards receiving respectively. Five different Yellow Jackets have caught a touchdown pass, including a pair for both Jayden Williams and Goods, while Olson, Connor Boyd, and TJ Chuckwurah have each hauled in one.
  • On the defensive side of the ball Black Hills State has held their opponents to 24.3 points per game with 231.0 passing and 80.8 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average of 311.8 yards of total offense through four games. BHSU has tallied 227.0 tackles with 29.0 tackles-for-loss and 11.0 sacks. The Yellow Jacket defense has forced six turnovers this year, recovering three fumbles and picking off three pass.
  • Mylic Ritche has been the dominant force up front for the Yellow Jackets, tallying a team-leading 24.0 tackles, 7.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, and two forced fumbles from his defensive line position.
  • The top player in the secondary this year for the Green & Gold has been Nicc Quinones who has recorded 23.0 tackles, two interceptions, and one pass break-up.
  • Leading BHSU from the linebacker position is Sebastian O'Farrell, who is third on the team with 21.0 tackles, while making 1.0 tackle-for-loss, 1.0 sack, and two pass breaking-ups.
  • Josh Breske is in his fifth season as the head coach at Black Hills State, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a record of 19-20 during his career.
SOUTH DAKOTA MINES STORYLINES
  • South Dakota Mines enters the RMAC contest with a 3-2 (3-1 RMAC) record in 2024 following a 49-33 win at Fort Lewis for their third consecutive victory.
  • The Hardrockers are averaging 32.4 points per game with 242.8 passing and 152.6 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average of 395.4 yards of total offense through five games. The SDM offense has scored 14 touchdowns through the air and seven on the ground during the season.
  • Taking the reins of the South Dakota Mines offense is Jake Martinelli, who has completed 118-of-209 passes for 1,169 yards, throwing 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.
  • The featured running back in the Hardrocker backfield will be Orlando Westbrook-Sanchez III who has rushed the ball 47 times for 282 net yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Holden Gilbert and Dawson Dunbar have also found the end zone twice on the ground.
  • The primary targets at wide receiver for SDM will be Mason Galbreath and Colton Grover who have both hauled in 20 and 16 passes while notching 285 and 226 yards receiving respectively. Grover has recorded five touchdowns while Galbreath has three this year.
  • On the defensive side of the ball South Dakota Mines has held their opponents to 29.8 points per game with 319.8 passing and 107.4 rushing yards per game, accumulating an average of 427.2 yards of total offense through five games. SDM has tallied 316.0 tackles with 45.0 tackles-for-loss and 17.0 sacks. The Hardrocker defense has forced nine turnovers this year, recovering five fumbles and picking off four passes.
  • Spearheading the South Dakota Mines defense is Hunter Newsom who has recorded 36.0 tackles, 10.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery at the linebacker position.
  • Another top player to watch is defensive back Will Lester, who has posted 24.0 tackles, 1.0 tackle-for-loss, and three pass break-ups.
  • The player to watch on the defensive line for the Hardrockers will be Thomas Fields, who has tallied 15.0 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, and 2.0 sacks.
  • Charlie Flohr is in his fifth season as the head coach at South Dakota Mines, guiding the Hardrockers to a record of 23-19 during his career.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday will mark the 139th meeting between Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines on the gridiron, with the Hardrockers holding a 66-61-11 lead in the series.
  • With a 49-14 win at Lyle Hare Stadium on September 30, 2023, SDM has now won three of the last four meetings in the series.
