SPEARFISH, S.D. – Head coach
Josh Breske and the Black Hills State University football team announced the 2025 gridiron schedule on Monday afternoon, a slate that features six home games at Lyle Hare Stadium. Included in the home schedule will be a pair of marquee games against in-state foes and a match-up with the defending RMAC champions. Also on the upcoming schedule will be a non-conference visit to perennial NCAA Division II power, Grand Valley State, in a first-ever meeting between the schools.
Â
The season gets underway with a week zero match-up on Thursday, August 28, in the first game of a home-and-home series against Sioux Falls. The Yellow Jackets will welcome the Cougars to Lyle Hare Stadium as the in-state foes renew a classic SDIC rivalry and will meet for the 33
rd time in a series led by BHSU (19-12-1). Black Hills State fell 44-20 in the most recent meeting between the programs on October 15, 2011. After beginning the season at home, the Yellow Jackets will then travel for their next three games, including a trip to perennial NCAA Division II power Grand Valley State as they visit the 4-time national champions on September 6 to end non-conference play. The trip to Allendale, Michigan, will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools and the Yellow Jackets first-ever contest against a current member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Â
The 2025 conference slate will begin on the road against regional rival Chadron State on September 13 as the Yellow Jackets will enter the contest having won three straight against the Eagles, their longest streak in the series as RMAC foes. BHSU will then end the stretch of three consecutive road games as they travel to Durango, Colorado, to take on Fort Lewis on September 20. Black Hills State notched their fifth consecutive victory over the Skyhawks with a 33-7 win in the 2024 edition of Swarm Days, however, FLC will be coming off one of the top turnaround seasons in the league, securing victories in two conference games following three winless years.
Â
Black Hills State will return home to conclude the month as they host RMAC power, Colorado School of Mines, on September 27 for the 2025 edition of Swarm Days. The Green & Gold will look for their first-ever win over the Orediggers, while CSM looks to rebound after their streak of five consecutive conference titles and postseason appearances came to an end this year. The second in-state rivalry of the season will begin the month of October, on October 4, as the most played rivalry in NCAA Division II football will mark the 140
th playing of the Black Hills Brawl when South Dakota Mines visits Lyle Hare Stadium. BHSU looks to retain the Homestake Trophy and become the first home team to win in five years as the visitors have won four straight.
Â
The lone road contest in the month of October will see the Yellow Jackets travel to Western Colorado to face the Mountaineers on October 12. The Green & Gold will look for their first win over WCU since 2017, while the Mountaineers will be coming off back-to-back second place finishes in the league as they are tied for the most conference wins in the RMAC over the past two years. Another conference opponent that Black Hills State will look to defeat for the first time in program history is CSU Pueblo, as they are set to host the defending RMAC champions on October 18 to close out the month.
Â
Following a bye week the final weekend of October, Black Hills State is back in action with a home match-up against Colorado Mesa on November 1. The Yellow Jackets will look to make it two straight wins in Spearfish over the Mavericks and three wins in four meetings overall against CMU. The final road trip of the season will be a visit to Alamosa, Colorado, and Adams State on November 8. The Yellow Jackets recorded their largest win of the 2024 season with a 45-3 victory over the Grizzlies on senior day and extended their win streak in the series to four games. After returning from Colorado, Black Hills State will close out the regular season with a home match-up against New Mexico Highlands on November 15. The senior day contest against the Cowboys will see BHSU seek their third consecutive win in the series after they notched their third consecutive winning season with a 48-31 victory in the 2024 finale.
