SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team (7-12, 6-8 RMAC) continued the momentum of playing on their home field in the month of March, picking up a pair of wins to start the series with Adams State (3-20, 1-13 RMAC).
Alyssa Wong recorded a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, while
Malaya Coleman recorded her first win of the season in the circle.
With the sweep this afternoon, the Yellow Jackets have tied their National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II era win streak with five-straight wins. Head coach
Ashlyn Englehorn noted, "I give all the credit to the team! We've been competing extremely well together and finding ways to have our pitchers' backs." For Englehorn, the current five-game win streak is a new career-best, notching a three-game win streak at Crown in 2023.
GAME 1: BHSU 7, Adams State 2
PITCHING DECISIONS:
Win: Malaya Coleman (1-3)
Loss: Aubree Davis (2-8)
Black Hills State continued to enjoy playing on their home field in a clear and sunny day in western South Dakota with the highs in the mid-50s all afternoon long as
Malaya Coleman (So., Johnstown, Colo.) made her first start of the season at home inside the circle, picking up her first win of 2024 as all three Yellow Jacket arms have no recorded wins at Yellow Jacket Field.
"Malaya dominated in the circle in Game 1 and her command was incredible," commented Englehorn. "She trusted her defense and let us play our game."
It would be the Yellow Jackets who started the scoring in the second inning, putting up a four-spot that would be enough as it was to earn the win in Game 1. An RBI ground out from
Audrey Fouras (So., Jackson, Wyo.) and a defensive miscue by the Grizzlies would give BH the early 2-0 lead.
Lily Simmons (So., Frederick, Colo.) would rope a double to right center to plate two more runs as the Jackets jumped out to the early 4-0 lead after two innings of play.
Adams State would plate their first run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Black Hills State would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half with an RBI single through the right side from
Alyssa Wong (R-Fr., San Antonio, Texas) to make it 5-1 Jackets.
The scoring would come to an end in the sixth inning with a combined three runs. The Grizzlies added another run with a solo home run from Belinda Vargas, but the Yellow Jackets would respond with two more runs in their final at-bat of the series opener. The third double of the season from Wong would score Coleman, while a sacrifice fly from
Ashlynn Pauwels (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) would put the ball in play for a sacrifice fly as BHSU took Game 1, 7-2, to make it four-straight wins this season.

The second game of the day proved to be a pitcher's duel with Black Hills State scoring both their runs int eh first two innings of the game. What proved to be the game-winning run came right away in the first inning with an RBI single up the middle from
Gianna Haley (Gr., Arvada, Colo.) that scored Lee, making it 1-0.
The second run came in the second on Wong's second RBI double of the day, which proved to be enough insurance for Peskey in the circle.
"(Alyssa) has been consistent for us at the plate and stepped up for us in the outfield today," noted Englehorn.
Twice the Grizzlies would start a frame with a lead-off double – fourth and sixth innings – but both times Peskey and the Yellow Jacket defense would hold firm and not allow them to score a run.
