GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University track and field teams wrapped up the 2023-24 regular season with the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Outdoor Championships, highlighted by
Sully Mack winning the RMAC title in the discus throw.
"Our group was able to go out in less-than-ideal conditions and put up some really incredible performances," commented head track and field coach
Austin Billings. "The group has grown exponentially and we will look to capitalize with an even bigger and more diverse unit next season!"
Friday started off with a bang, despite the thunderstorm conditions and lightning delays in Grand Junction. Graduate
Sully Mack (Gr., Watertown, S.D.) won the gold medal with his final throw in finals, earning a mark of 46.16 meters.
I am super proud of (Sully) Mack earning his first-place medal in the disc and representing BH at such a high-level competition!" said Billings. "He was able to win in dramatic fashion taking over the number one spot with his last throw of the competition!
The Yellow Jackets also saw a pair of other podium finishes, as
Braden Anderson (So., Haxtun, Colo.) turned heads in the preliminary of the 800-meter run. He continued to perform at an exceptionally high level, taking a time of 1:52.76 in the finals for a third-place finish.
"(Braden) Anderson has continued to impress with his 800-meter. He is itching closer and closer to the provisional mark and has proven why he is one of the best middle-distance runners in the RMAC," noted Billings. "His prelim race, I think, put all the coaches in shock as he completely dominated the competition in dramatic fashion as well!
The Black Hills State men's 4x100 meter relay team of
Jace Johnson (Fr., Rapid City, S.D.),
Brendan Flock (Fr., Torrington, Wyo.),
Jude Guevara (Fr., Cheyenne, Wyo.), and
Mason Sartain (Sr., Bonneyville, Alberta, Canada) entered the championships as the No. 7-seed. The Yellow Jacket relay team didn't let that bother them as a time of 41.49 seconds gave them a third-place and All-Conference finish.
"Our 4x100 relay was super exciting to see live an in action. That group of young men went in seeded seventh and was able to come home with a bronze medal!" commented Billings. "Having (Mason) Sartain run with three true freshmen and come home with the second-fastest time in BH history is a testament to all the hard work they've put in this season. That group is hungrier than ever and will look to come back even faster next year."
