Yellow Jackets to Meet #9/9 CSU Pueblo on Heroes Day

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team will return home Lyle Hare Stadium and face their second consecutive top-10 opponent as they welcome No. 9/9 CSU Pueblo on Saturday, October 18. The game between the Yellow Jackets and ThunderWolves will feature two of the top wide receivers in the country as TJ Chukwurah continues to lead the country in receiving touchdowns and is second in receiving yards, while CSUP’s 2024 All-American, Reggie Retzlaff, ranks second in receiving touchdowns.

Parking: Implemented for the 2025 football season, both the Young Center Lot and the Creek Side Lot will now be paid parking. Both will be $10 and CASH ONLY. Yellow Jacket Club members must show their parking pass for a reserved spot in the Creek Side Lot. Lots will open three hours prior to kick off.

Promotions: Saturday is Heroes Day for the Yellow Jackets, honoring all local veterans, active military, and first responders. Any local hero attending the game will receive free admission for themselves and two guests.

RMAC Network: Beginning in the 2025-26 season the RMAC Network will now move to Pay-Per-View. Fans can purchase a single game pass ($10), monthly ($25) or annual subscription ($130). Individuals with bhsu.edu or yellowjackets.bhsu.edu email address can still take advantage of the Peak Pricing Promotion by using the code Y26-RMACEDU.

KDSJ Radio: Black Hills State football continues to air live on KDSJ Radio with the voice of the Yellow Jackets, Steve Ammerman, giving the play-by-play for all the action.

Food Trucks: Four food trucks, including Black Hills Brats, Hangry’s, Sergeant Poppers, and Loud American, will be located around the track for fans to purchase food and drink items.

  • Black Hills State currently sits at 1-6 (1-4 RMAC) on the season after a 56-17 road loss at No. 5/6 Western Colorado.
  • Earlier this season senior linebacker, Sebastian O’Farrell was announced as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, otherwise known as the “Academic Heisman” for his work in the classroom and on the field.
  • The Yellow Jacket’s two non-conference opponents are a combined 8-4 this season as Sioux Falls is 4-3 and No. 7/12 Grand Valley State is 4-1.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished tied for fifth in the RMAC a year ago and are predicted to finish tied for fifth in the standings in 2025.
  • Black Hills State is coming off their third consecutive winning season, extending the longest stretch for the program in their NCAA Division II era (2011-present) and marking the longest stretch since they posted six straight from 2005-10.
  • Returning starting quarterback Luke Duby has completed 150-of-230 passing attempts for 1,511 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season. Against GVSU he completed 38-of-51 passing attempts for 359 yards and three touchdowns, setting new career-best marks for completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns. After 283 yards through the air against the Colorado School of Mines, he has notched eight career 200-yard passing games and two 300-yard passing games in his career. Nationally he is 13th in NCAA Division II in completions per game (21.43), 17th in passing touchdowns (17), 22nd in completion percentage (0.652), and 24th in passing yards (1,511).
  • The pair of Cameron Goods and Danny Davis continue to lead the rushing attack, recording 265 and 216 yards on the ground respectively. Davis has found the end zone twice while rushing the ball, and adds another two receiving touchdowns, while Goods has found the end zone once this season.
  • Black Hills State has shown the importance of TJ Chukwurah’s return at the wide receiver position as he notched three straight 100-yard receiving games to begin the year and added a fourth last weekend against No. 5/6 Western Colorado. He remains second all divisions of NCAA football (FBS, FCS, DII, and DIII) with 12 receiving touchdowns and is first in NCAA Division II. Against GVSU he set career-bests of 12 receptions and 182 receiving yards, while the three receiving touchdowns matched a career-high. He is the only player in the school’s DII history to have multiple three receiving touchdown games, having done so now three times. This year he has tallied 43 receptions for 716 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He also ranks second in DII in receiving yards, is seventh in receiving yards per game (102.3), and is 16th in receptions per game (6.1). Through the first five games of the year, he broke the Black Hills State DII era record for receiving touchdowns, breaking his own record of eight set in 2023.
  • A young offensive line, anchored by redshirt senior and 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, Jayson Rouse, has not allowed a sack by the opponent twice this season, doing so against Sioux Falls and South Dakota Mines. The game against the Hardrockers marked the sixth time since the start of the 2024 season that the Yellow Jacket o-line has not surrendered a sack in a game.
  • While the defensive line continues to be spearheaded by returners with Kellen Collier, a 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, and Cooper Brown, the 2022 RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year, both Isaiah Morales and Hershel Craig III have also made an impact. Collier currently has 39.0 total tackles, 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hurries. Morales adds 5.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks in addition to 18.0 total tackles on the year. Craig has posted 4.0 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, and six quarterback hurries, and Brown has a team-best 7.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks to go along with six quarterback hurries.
  • Rune Tepolt has emerged as the player to watch on the defense from the linebacker position, totaling a team-high 44.0 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hurries. Against Colorado School of Mines, he notched a new career-high of 11.0 tackles in a game, becoming one of two Yellow Jackets to reach the double-digit mark in tackles in the game this year.
  • Jack Gentil has led the defensive backs with 41.0 total tackles on the season, including 0.5 tackles for loss and three pass break ups. He has recorded five or more tackles in four consecutive games and notched 10.0 tackles in back-to-back outings against CSM and SDM.
  • Joshua Faulkner has snagged a team-best two interceptions this season, with one apiece in match-ups against Fort Lewis and Colorado School of Mines. The Yellow Jacket offense has gone on to find the end zone the ensuing drive after both of his interceptions, converting the turnovers into six points.
  • Mason Crosby has played a key role on special teams, averaging 39.1 yards per punt, booting five over 50 yards, and pinning four inside the 20-yard line. Furthermore, of his four punts inside the 20-yard line, three of those have pinned the opposing offenses starting position inside their own 5-yard line. Against Chadron State he recorded a 73-yard punt, the 12th-longest in NCAA Division II this season, and pinned a pair of punts inside the 5-yard line, en route to being named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • Josh Breske is in his sixth season as the head coach at his alma mater and is now tied as the third-longest active tenured coach in the RMAC. Additionally, he is just the tenth coach in school history to reach the 6-year threshold. His six wins in 2024 brought him into the top-10 all-time in Yellow Jacket history, and he now boasts a career record of 24-29 guiding the program, currently ranking ninth in victories. Last Saturday’s win at Fort Lewis marked his 50th game at the helm of the program.
  • CSU Pueblo enters the game with a record of 6-1 (5-0 RMAC) as they won their 21st straight conference game against Fort Lewis by a score of 49-13 last Saturday.
  • Along with the 21-game conference win streak, CSUP has won 12 consecutive road games, with both streaks dating back to the 2023 season.
  • The ThunderWolves are currently ranked within the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll and the D2Football.com Media Poll, ranking No. 9 in both.
  • Roman Fuller has been among the top quarterbacks in the country this season, completing 146-of-237 passing attempts for 1,806 yards, 19 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Nationally in NCAA Division II he ranks fourth in passing touchdowns and is eighth in passing yards.
  • The pair of Russell Patton and Devin Cross have each surpassed 300 yards on the ground this season, running for 395 and 325 yards respectively. Patton has found the end zone five times while Cross has three touchdowns. Patton has one 100-yard rushing game this season, tallying 108 yards and one touchdown on just ten carries against Adams State.
  • Reggie Retzlaff makes it a head-to-head battle of the top-2 wide receivers in the country. He has hauled in 37 receptions for 501 yards and ten touchdowns. He is currently tied for second in NCAA Division II in receiving touchdowns and is 15th in receptions per game (6.2). He has one 100-yard receiving game this year, a 100-yard, three touchdown performance against Colorado Mesa.
  • Linebackers Gary Seidenberger and Bryson Torrie lead the defense with 44.0 total tackles respectively. Seidenberger also adds 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, three quarterback hurries, and one pass break up. Torrie adds 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, three pass break ups, two interceptions, and has one forced fumble and fumble recovery.
  • The ThunderWolves are among the best in the country in creating turnovers, leading the nation in turnovers gained (22) and interceptions (14). Leading the secondary with three interceptions apiece are De’Monti Jackson and Peyton Shaw. Both players have had a 2-interception performance this year as Jackson did so against Colorado Mesa and Shaw did so against Central Missouri.
  • Phillip Vigil is in his third season as the head coach at CSU Pueblo, guiding the ThunderWolves to a record of 24-6 and the 2024 RMAC Championship. Overall, this is his fifth season as a collegiate head coach after spending two prior years at Western New Mexico and has recorded a 31-21 career record between the pair of schools.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Saturday will mark the 13th meeting between Black Hills State and CSU Pueblo as members of the RMAC, with the ThunderWolves leading the all-time series 12-0.
  • With the help of a last second field goal and a pair of blocked field goals returned for touchdowns, then No. 14/13 CSUP survived with a 24-21 victory at the ThunderBowl on October 19, 2024.
