Yellow Jackets Open November at Home Against Colorado Mesa

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The calendar flips to November as Black Hills State will play the first of two remaining home games on the 2025 football schedule on Saturday, November 1, as they host Colorado Mesa. A match-up that will feature one of the top rush defenses going up against one of the top rush offenses, the Yellow Jackets will look to continue the recent success at Lyle Hare Stadium against the Mavericks as they enter having won three of the last four games in the series played in Spearfish.

Parking: Implemented for the 2025 football season, both the Young Center Lot and the Creek Side Lot will now be paid parking. Both will be $10 and CASH ONLY. Yellow Jacket Club members must show their parking pass for a reserved spot in the Creek Side Lot. Lots will open three hours prior to kick off.

Promotions: Continue the Halloween fun and bring the kids for Trunk or Treating with the Yellow Jackets, set to take place at halftime of the game. Kids are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes while it is also a Black Out.

RMAC Network: Beginning in the 2025-26 season the RMAC Network will now move to Pay-Per-View. Fans can purchase a single game pass ($10), monthly ($25) or annual subscription ($130). KDSJ Radio: Black Hills State football continues to air live on KDSJ Radio with the voice of the Yellow Jackets, Steve Ammerman, giving the play-by-play for all the action.

Food Trucks: Four food trucks, including Black Hills Brats, Hangry’s, Sergeant Poppers, and CD’s Wings, will be located around the track for fans to purchase food and drink items.

  • Coming off of a bye week, Black Hills State currently sits at 1-7 (1-5 RMAC) on the season after a 40-14 loss at home to No. 9/9 CSU Pueblo.
  • Earlier this season senior linebacker, Sebastian O’Farrell was announced as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, otherwise known as the “Academic Heisman” for his work in the classroom and on the field.
  • The Yellow Jacket’s two non-conference opponents are a combined 9-6 this season as Sioux Falls is 5-3 and No. 25/-- Grand Valley State is 4-3.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished tied for fifth in the RMAC a year ago and are predicted to finish tied for fifth in the standings in 2025. They currently sit alone in eighth place in the league standings.
  • Black Hills State is coming off their third consecutive winning season, extending the longest stretch for the program in their NCAA Division II era (2011-present) and marking the longest stretch since they posted six straight from 2005-10.
  • Returning starting quarterback Luke Duby has completed 150-of-230 passing attempts for 1,511 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season. Against GVSU he completed 38-of-51 passing attempts for 359 yards and three touchdowns, setting new career-best marks for completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns. After 283 yards through the air against the Colorado School of Mines, he has notched eight career 200-yard passing games and two 300-yard passing games in his career. Nationally he is 15th in NCAA Division II in completions per game (21.43) and 19th in completion percentage (0.652).
  • The pair of Cameron Goods and Danny Davis continue to lead the rushing attack, recording 332 and 239 yards on the ground respectively. Davis has found the end zone four times while rushing the ball, and adds another two receiving touchdowns, while Goods has found the end zone once this season. Davis has notched three multi-touchdown games this year, rushing for two touchdowns against No. 9/9 CSU Pueblo, while also recording a rushing and receiving touchdown against both Chadron State and Fort Lewis.
  • Black Hills State has shown the importance of TJ Chukwurah’s return at the wide receiver position as he notched three straight 100-yard receiving games to begin the year and added a fourth last month against No. 5/6 Western Colorado. He remains tied for fifth in all divisions of NCAA football (FBS, FCS, DII, and DIII) with 12 receiving touchdowns and is first in NCAA Division II. Against GVSU he set career-bests of 12 receptions and 182 receiving yards, while the three receiving touchdowns matched a career-high. He is the only player in the school’s DII history to have multiple three receiving touchdown games, having done so now three times. This year he has tallied 46 receptions for 726 yards, and 12 touchdowns. He also ranks eighth in DII in receiving yards, is 11th in receiving yards per game (90.8), and is 22nd  in receptions per game (5.75). Through the first five games of the year, he broke the Black Hills State DII era record for receiving touchdowns, breaking his own record of eight set in 2023.
  • A young offensive line, anchored by redshirt senior and 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, Jayson Rouse, has not allowed a sack by the opponent twice this season, doing so against Sioux Falls and South Dakota Mines. The game against the Hardrockers marked the sixth time since the start of the 2024 season that the Yellow Jacket o-line has not surrendered a sack in a game.
  • While the defensive line continues to be spearheaded by returners with Kellen Collier, a 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, and Cooper Brown, the 2022 RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year, both Isaiah Morales and Hershel Craig III have also made an impact. Collier currently has 45.0 total tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, and four quarterback hurries. Morales adds 5.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks in addition to 19.0 total tackles on the year. Craig has posted 4.0 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, and six quarterback hurries, and Brown has a team-best 8.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks to go along with eight quarterback hurries. The pair of Brown and Morales currently rank fifth in the RMAC with an average of 0.5 sacks per game, and Brown also ranks sixth in the league with 1.06 tackles-for-loss per game.
  • Rune Tepolt has emerged as the player to watch on the defense from the linebacker position, totaling a team-high 49.0 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hurries. Against Colorado School of Mines, he notched a new career-high of 11.0 tackles in a game, becoming one of two Yellow Jackets to reach the double-digit mark in tackles in a game this year. He currently ranks eighth in the RMAC with an average of 7.0 tackles per game.
  • Jack Gentil has led the defensive backs with 46.0 total tackles on the season, including 1.0 tackles for loss and three pass break ups. He has recorded five or more tackles in five consecutive games and notched 10.0 tackles in back-to-back outings against CSM and SDM.
  • Joshua Faulkner has snagged a team-best two interceptions this season, with one apiece in match-ups against Fort Lewis and Colorado School of Mines. The Yellow Jacket offense has gone on to find the end zone the ensuing drive after both of his interceptions, converting the turnovers into six points.
  • Mason Crosby has played a key role on special teams, averaging 38.1 yards per punt, booting five over 50 yards, and pinning four inside the 20-yard line. Furthermore, of his four punts inside the 20-yard line, three of those have pinned the opposing offenses starting position inside their own 5-yard line. Against Chadron State he recorded a 73-yard punt, the 14th-longest in NCAA Division II this season, and pinned a pair of punts inside the 5-yard line, en route to being named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • Bryce Coulson has been among the top return men in the country, totaling a combined 436 return yards on kickoffs and punts, leading the RMAC and ranking 25th in the nation. Additionally, he is one of just three players in the conference to take a kickoff back for a touchdown, doing so on the road against Grand Valley State.
  • Josh Breske is in his sixth season as the head coach at his alma mater and is now tied as the third-longest active tenured coach in the RMAC. Additionally, he is just the tenth coach in school history to reach the 6-year threshold. His six wins in 2024 brought him into the top-10 all-time in Yellow Jacket history, and he now boasts a career record of 24-30 guiding the program, currently ranking ninth in victories. In September’s win at Fort Lewis, he coached his 50th game at the helm of the program.
  • Colorado Mesa enters the game with a record of 4-4 (3-3 RMAC) on the season following a 24-14 win at home against Fort Lewis.
  • After starting the year at 1-3 overall, the Mavericks have turned their season around and gotten back to .500 by winning three of their last four games, including a victory at Colorado School of Mines for the Nyikos Cup.
  • The running game has been critical to the success of CMU this season, as the team is 4-1 when rushing for more than 240 yards and is 0-3 when rushing for less than 200 yards.
  • As a team, the Mavericks have run the ball 309 times this season, totaling 1,865 yards for 18 touchdowns. They average 6.0 yards per carry, and the 233.13 yards per game on the ground ranks second in the conference.
  • Leading the rushing attack is Aiden Taylor, who has carried the ball 137 times for 808 yards and ten touchdowns, averaging 5.9 yards per carry and 101.0 yards per game. He has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in four consecutive games and five times on the season. Taylor enters the contest having ran for 167 and 163 yards respectively in each of his last two outings against New Mexico Highlands and Fort Lewis. He ranks 14th in NCAA Division II in both rushing touchdowns and rushing yards and is 16th in rushing yards per game. He ranks second in the RMAC in all three previously mentioned stat categories.
  • The Mavericks have split time at quarterback between Liu Aumavae and Cole Hansen. Aumavae leads the team by completing 67-of-114 passing attempts for 739 yards and five touchdowns through the air, while also throwing five interceptions. He has not thrown for more than 100 yards since the first three games of the season, and his lone 200-yard passing game occurred against CSU Pueblo when he notched 248 passing yards and three touchdowns.
  • Trek Keyworth is the leading receiver for CMU, hauling in 20 receptions for 417 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has two 100-yard receiving games, which includes recording a season-high of 147 yards in the season opener against Central Washington.
  • At the linebacker position, George Soppe leads the defense with 72.0 total tackles and 6.5 tackles-for-loss to go along with four pass break-ups and two quarterback hurries. He has reached double digit tackles in three games, including against Eastern New Mexico when he notched a season-high of 14. He ranks second in the RMAC with 9.0 tackles per game.
  • Kade Street and Hunter Hamilton are the players to watch on the defensive line as Street adds 30.0 total tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss, and 0.5 sacks, while Hunter adds 18.0 total tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss, and 1.5 sacks.
  • Defensive backs Gibson Leafgreen and Kash Bradley have each collected a pair of interceptions this season and have broken up two and three passes respectively. Leafgreen adds 42.0 total tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss, and 1.0 sack this year, while Bradley has notched 31.0 total tackles.
  • Miles Kochevar is in his fourth season as the head coach at Colorado Mesa, guiding the Mavericks to a 21-19 record during his career.

  • Black Hills State and Colorado Mesa will meet for the 14th time all-time on Saturday afternoon, with the Mavericks holding the 9-4 advantage in the series.
  • The Mavericks snapped a 2-game win streak in the series for the Yellow Jackets last season, earning a 23-13 win in Grand Junction on November 2, 2024.
  • BHSU is 3-3 all-time at Lyle Hare Stadium against CMU, including winning three of the last four in Spearfish. The last time the teams played in Spearfish it was a Hasaan Williams receiving touchdown from Chance Eben with 43 seconds to play that gave the Yellow Jackets the 31-28 victory on September 24, 2022.
