BHSU’s Season Begins with a Home Lone Star Matchup Versus St. Edward’s

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State Women’s Basketball is officially back as the Yellow Jackets will look to start the season off strong against a tough St. Edward’s team who is coming off a solid year in the Lone Star conference. It will be the first look at the new era of BHSU Women’s Basketball with a new head coach in Kelly Kruger and only one returning starter from last year’s team, with only two upperclassmen. The Yellow Jackets will look to keep the positive momentum from last season going into this season.

  • The Yellow Jackets are a brand-new team. They only have seven returning players and only two saw meaningful minutes last year with only one starter returning in Bradie Schlabs. Last year the Yellow Jackets went 18-11 (13-7 RMAC) and finished fourth in the conference and won a game in the RMAC Tournament. They bring in three transfers and six freshmen, while getting two girls back from injury.
  • The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish sixth in the conference in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll with 127 points and one third place vote.
  • Reigning All-RMAC Second Team Bradie Schlabs is the only starter returning this year. She was named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team. Schlabs was third on the team last year with 12.6 points per game, 5.4 rebounds a game and a historic 4.4 assists per game. Her 129 assists was good enough for third all-time in a single season in BHSU history and so was her 4.4 assists per game. She was the first player in BHSU history to have 300 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists in the same season and was the first player since 2023 to win an RMAC Player of the Week award. She reached double-digit points in 17 of her last 20 games and had three double-doubles. She had a career-high 24 points versus CSUP, 12 rebounds versus Sioux Falls and eight assists versus Adams.
  • Maureen Ulrich is another top returner for the Yellow Jackets this year. Ulrich played in seven games averaging 17.6 minutes per game before going down with injury. She averaged 6.1 points per game and had a career-high 19 points in the loss to (RV) Lubbock Christian.
  • Addie Branscum is a newcomer, who is set to make a huge impact for the Yellow Jackets. In her freshman season with RMAC opponent Regis, Branscum started seven of the 27 games and averaged 25.3 minutes per game. She was fifth on the team with 6.0 points per game but was third with 5.3 rebounds per game. She shot 44.8 percent from the field making 60-134. She reached double digits in points five times and double digits in rebounds three times. Her career-high was 13 points, which she accomplished twice, and 13 rebounds, which she did late in the season versus Colorado Christian.
  • Brinlee McRae is the other big transfer for BHSU. As one of only two upperclassmen, she brings a lot of experience and leadership to this young squad. McRae spent last season at in-state foe Augustana, where she started in 13 games and played 19.7 minutes per game. She averaged 6.5 points per game with 33 assists and 38 steals. She had a 33.0 percent field goal percentage and made 29-88 threes. She reached ten points nine times including a season-high 18 versus Hastings.
  • Head coach Kelly Kruger is entering into his first season as Interim Head Coach of the BHSU Yellow Jackets. He is in his 35th season as a head coach, however, and has a record of 531-446 with programs across all levels of college basketball including Northwestern College, Southwest Minnesota State, Adams State, Ashford University, and Iowa Central Community College.
  • The St. Edward’s Hilltoppers are on the complete opposite foot as BHSU this year. They return almost every key piece except for one from a team last year that went 11-20 (7-15 LSC) and finished sixth in the East Division of the Lone Star Conference. They enter this season having lost four in a row to end last season and have a coach who is in his 13th season.
  • St. Edward’s was a top 60 free-throw shooting team in the country last year shooting 74.5 percent from the charity stripe. Two of their top returners, Kiana Bennett and Ramsey Robledo each shot over 80 percent from the line.
  • St. Edward’s was picked to finish 11th in the Lone Star this year who leaves the division format and they were given 363 points, which was just behind St. Mary’s and just ahead of Oklahoma Christian.
  • J.P. Perkins is the top returner for the Hilltoppers. She was their leading scorer with 13.6 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 3.9 assists per game. She shot 42 percent from the field with 155-365 and 34.9 percent from behind the arc. She was ranked third in the LSC in assists and assists per game while ranking sixth in free-throw attempts (129), seventh in points (421), eighth in field goal percentage, and ninth in field goal attempts and points per game. The sophomore made it to ten points in all but six games last year including a career-high 31 versus Texas-Permian Basin. She had one double-double last year and had multiple assists in all but three games including a career-high eight on three occasions.
  • Kiana Bennett is one of the other top returners for SEU. She was one of the top three-point shooters in the conference last year. She averaged 10.6 points per game on 34.8 percent from behind the arc, which was second in the conference. Her 62 three pointers made was third in the conference, while her 178 attempts was sixth in the conference. She also shot 82.0 percent from the free throw line going 50-61.
  • Mikah Chapman is the third big returner for the Hilltoppers. Chapman was one of the top forwards in the conference last year with 4.6 rebounds per game and was fifth in the LSC in blocks per game (.94) and sixth in total blocks (29). She had a career-high three blocks versus Arlington Baptist.
  • Head Coach J.J. Riehl is in her 13th season as coach of St. Edward’s. She has a 176-186 record in her career. After starting her career with five winning seasons in her first eight years, Riehl has not had a winning season since the 2019-2020 season. She has appeared in two NCAA Tournament’s in 2013-14 and 2016-17.
