Black Hills State Set for 2025 Finale Against New Mexico Highlands at Lyle Hare Stadium

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State will conclude the 2025 season and the 75th season of football Lyle Hare Stadium on Saturday, November 15, as they host New Mexico Highlands. The Yellow Jackets look to carry the momentum of their second road win of the year in a dominant shutout win over Adams State into the senior day match-up with the Cowboys that features one of the top running backs in the country and one of the top wide receivers.

Parking: Implemented for the 2025 football season, both the Young Center Lot and the Creek Side Lot will now be paid parking. Both will be $10 and CASH ONLY. Yellow Jacket Club members must show their parking pass for a reserved spot in the Creek Side Lot. Lots will open three hours prior to kick off.

Senior Day: 30 minutes prior to kickoff the Black Hills State football team will recognize 14 seniors for their dedication to the program, including Ray Penniman II, Luke Duby, Cooper Brown, Ryan Ewing, Jayson Rouse, Wes Koenig, Dade Bissell, Cameron Goods, Kelby Olson, Ashar Granger, Peyton Millis, Aric Eades, Sebastian O’Farrell, and Kellen Collier.

RMAC Network: Beginning in the 2025-26 season the RMAC Network will now move to Pay-Per-View. Fans can purchase a single game pass ($10), monthly ($25) or annual subscription ($130). KDSJ Radio: Black Hills State football continues to air live on KDSJ Radio with the voice of the Yellow Jackets, Steve Ammerman, giving the play-by-play for all the action.

Food Trucks: Five food trucks, including Black Hills Brats, Hangry’s, Sergeant Poppers, CD’s Wings, and Food Addiction will be located around the track for fans to purchase food and drink items.

  • Black Hills State enters the weekend with a record of 2-8 (2-6 RMAC) after a dominant 59-0 shutout victory at Adams State last Saturday.
  • The Yellow Jacket offense has come to life the last two weeks first totaling 449 yards of total offense against Colorado Mesa and then recording 599 yards against Adams State. The 599-yard performance was the seventh under head coach Josh Breske, improving to 6-1 in those contests. BHSU’s 59 points were the most since a 75-point outing at Fort Lewis in 2022.
  • The shutout against the Grizzlies was the first since a 75-0 victory at Fort Lewis in 2022, as they held ASU to just 237 yards of total offense with an average of 3.6 yards per play.
  • Earlier this season senior linebacker, Sebastian O’Farrell was announced as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, otherwise known as the “Academic Heisman” for his work in the classroom and on the field.
  • The Yellow Jacket’s two non-conference opponents are a combined 12-7 this season as Sioux Falls is 6-4 and No. 21/25 Grand Valley State is 6-3. Overall, eight of the Yellow Jackets 11 opponents this year have winning records and five of them already have six or more victories to secure winning seasons.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished tied for fifth in the RMAC a year ago and were predicted to finish tied for fifth in the standings in 2025. They currently sit tied for seventh place in the league standings with South Dakota Mines.
  • While they will not be able to extend the streak this year, Black Hills State is coming off their third consecutive winning season in 2024, the longest stretch for the program in their NCAA Division II era (2011-present) and marking the longest stretch since they posted six straight from 2005-10.
  • Returning starting quarterback Luke Duby has completed 190-of-289 passing attempts for 2,155 yards, 21 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season. Against GVSU he completed 38-of-51 passing attempts for 359 yards and three touchdowns, setting new career-best marks for completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns. After 313 and 331 yards through the air in back-to-back games against CMU and ASU the last two weeks, he has notched ten career 200-yard passing games and four 300-yard passing games. Additionally, he is now up to four games this season with three or more passing touchdown and has now thrown zero interceptions in three consecutive games with a streak of 90 straight passes without an interception. He currently ranks 14th in NCAA Division II in completions per game (21.11), 17th in completion percentage (0.657), and 23rd in passing touchdowns (21). He leads the RMAC in completion percentage.
  • The pair of Cameron Goods and Danny Davis have spearheaded the rushing attack all season long, which included leading the team to a season-high of 136 and 198 net rushing yards in back-to-back weeks against Colorado Mesa and Adams State. The duo has recorded 501 and 276 yards on the ground respectively. Davis has found the end zone four times while rushing the ball, and adds another two receiving touchdowns, while Goods has found the end zone twice this season. Davis has notched three multi-touchdown games this year, rushing for two touchdowns against No. 9/9 CSU Pueblo, while also recording a rushing and receiving touchdown against both Chadron State and Fort Lewis.
  • Black Hills State has shown the importance of TJ Chukwurah’s return at the wide receiver position as he notched three straight 100-yard receiving games to begin the year and has added two within the last four outings against No. 5/6 Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa. He remains tied for sixth in all divisions of NCAA football (FBS, FCS, DII, and DIII) with 15 receiving touchdowns and is first in NCAA Division II. Against GVSU he set career-bests of 12 receptions and 182 receiving yards, while the three receiving touchdowns matched a career-high. He is the only player in the school’s DII history to have multiple three receiving touchdown games, having done so now three times. This year he has tallied 59 receptions for 953 yards, and 15 touchdowns. He also ranks fifth in DII in receiving yards, is sixth in receiving yards per game (95.3), and is 17th in receptions per game (5.90).
  • Through the first five games of the year, Chukwurah broke the Black Hills State DII era record for receiving touchdowns, breaking his own record of eight set in 2023. Additionally, he is one touchdown away from tying second all-time in school single season history and is three away from tying the record of 18. Also, the DII era single season receiving yards record holder at BHSU, he is 47 yards away from being the first receiver to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a year. He is now up to 2,200 receiving yards and 27 receiving touchdowns in his career.
  • Black Hills State saw four different receivers haul in a touchdown pass against Adams State, including Chukwurah, Kelby Olson, Ashar Granger, Josh Dunn, and Chase Lofton. Olson secured his second career 100-yard receiving game and his first multi-touchdown game.
  • A young offensive line, anchored by redshirt senior and 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, Jayson Rouse, has not allowed a sack by the opponent three times this season, doing so against Sioux Falls, South Dakota Mines, and Colorado Mesa. The game against the Mavericks marked the seventh time since the start of the 2024 season that the Yellow Jacket o-line has not surrendered a sack in a game.
  • While the defensive line continues to be spearheaded by returners with Kellen Collier, a 2024 First Team All-RMAC selection, and Cooper Brown, the 2022 RMAC Defensive Freshman of the Year, both Isaiah Morales and Hershel Craig III have also made an impact. Collier currently has 52.0 total tackles, 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hurries. Morales adds 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks in addition to 23.0 total tackles on the year. Craig has posted 4.0 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sack, and six quarterback hurries, and Brown has a team-best 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks to go along with eight quarterback hurries. Brown currently ranks seventh in the RMAC with an average of 0.95 tackles for loss per game.
  • Jack Gentil leads the defense with 62.0 total tackles on the season, including 1.0 tackle for loss and three pass break ups. He has recorded five or more tackles in seven consecutive games and notched ten or more tackles in three outings, including a season-high of 11 against Colorado Mesa two weeks ago. He currently ranks tenth in the RMAC with an average of 6.2 tackles per game.
  • Rune Tepolt has also emerged as a player to watch on the defense from the linebacker position, ranking second on the team with 54.0 tackles while adding 6.5 tackles-for-loss, and four quarterback hurries. Against Colorado School of Mines, he notched a new career-high of 11.0 tackles in a game and he has notched five or more tackles in seven contests.
  • Joshua Faulkner has snagged a team-best three interceptions this season, with one apiece in match-ups against Fort Lewis, Colorado School of Mines, and Adams State. He currently ranks fifth in the RMAC and 36th in NCAA Division II in interceptions per game, averaging 0.33 per contest. All three of his picks have resulted in six points, with the Yellow Jacket offense going on to find the end zone the ensuing drive after both of his interceptions against FLC and CSM, while against ASU he took the ball 40 yards to the house.
  • Mason Crosby has played a key role on special teams, averaging 37.3 yards per punt, booting five over 50 yards, and pinning four inside the 20-yard line. Furthermore, of his four punts inside the 20-yard line, three of those have pinned the opposing offenses starting position inside their own 5-yard line. Against Chadron State he recorded a 73-yard punt, the 16th-longest in NCAA Division II this season, and pinned a pair of punts inside the 5-yard line, en route to being named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • Bryce Coulson has been among the top return men in the country, totaling a combined 528 return yards on kickoffs and punts, leading the RMAC and ranking 22nd in the nation. Additionally, he is one of just three players in the conference to take a kickoff back for a touchdown, doing so on the road against Grand Valley State. Two weeks ago, against Colorado Mesa, he totaled 84 yards on three kickoff returns, including a 43 yard return in the third quarter that led to a field goal. He has posted a kickoff return of 40 or more yards in two of the last three games played.
  • Josh Breske is in his sixth season as the head coach at his alma mater and is now tied as the third-longest active tenured coach in the RMAC. Additionally, he is just the tenth coach in school history to reach the 6-year threshold. His six wins in 2024 brought him into the top-10 all-time in Yellow Jacket history, and he now boasts a career record of 25-31 guiding the program, currently ranking ninth in victories. In September’s win at Fort Lewis, he coached his 50th game at the helm of the program.
  • New Mexico Highlands enters the game with a record of 6-4 (4-4 RMAC) after a 31-14 victory over Fort Lewis in their home finale. The win over the Skyhawks secured the Cowboys’ first winning season since 2012 (excluding 2021 Spring shortened season), when they went 8-3. 
  • NMHU has recorded the second-best overall win improvement in the RMAC this season, recording a four win improvement from last season while Chadron State has seen a five win improvement.
  • The Cowboys have split time at quarterback between Collin Stucki and Ike Udengwu, who have each played in seven contests. Stucki has completed 65-of-94 passes for 782 yards, four touchdowns and one interception this year while Undengwu has completed 35-of-68 passing attempts for eight touchdowns and two interceptions.
  • Leading the most prolific rushing attack in the RMAC and the fifth ranked ground game in NCAA Division II is freshman Jeffery Jones. He is one of four players that have ran for more than 200 yards this season. The 2-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and 1-time D2Football National Offensive Player of the Week has carried the ball 148 times for 1,575 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 10.5 yards per rush and 172.0 yards per game. He is only 74 yards away from setting the NMHU all-time single season rushing record and is on pace to set the single seasons yards per carry record that stands at 8.3 currently. He has rushed for more than 200 yards in three games, including setting a season-best 385 yards against Western New Mexico. He leads NCAA Division II in yards per carry and is second in total rushing yards.
  • Mike Jones has been the leading receiver for NMHU, hauling in 38 receptions for 592 yards and seven touchdowns. He was named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week once this year as he is one of the three players in the conference to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season, taking a 99 yard kickoff return to the house against South Dakota Mines. He has three 100-yard receiving games this year, including a season-best 116 yards and three touchdowns against the Hardrockers.
  • Freshman defensive back, Awsten Turnbow, leads the defense with 51.0 total tackles on the year and 1.5 tackles for loss. He has two games this season with double digit tackles, including a 12 tackle performance against South Dakota Mines.
  • Another defensive back to watch is Trevor Romaldo who is second in NCAA Division II with seven interceptions this season. The senior has one multi-interception game, picking off two against the Skyhawks last week and has picked off a pass in three of the last four games. He also has 37.0 total tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss.
  • Leading the way up front on the defensive line is Corey Martin who has recorded a team-best 7.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. He has recorded multiple tackles for loss in two games this year, doing so against Western Colorado and Chadron State.
  • Kurt Taufa’asau is in his second season as the head coach at New Mexico Highlands, guiding the Cowboys to a record of 8-13 during his tenure.

  • Saturday marks the 13th all-time meeting in the series between Black Hills State and New Mexico Highlands, with the Yellow Jackets holding the edge 7-5.
  • The Yellow Jackets won their second straight in the series last year on November 16, 2024, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, with a 48-31 victory that saw Cameron Goods rush for a career-best 178 yards and three touchdowns.
  • The last time the two teams played in Spearfish the Green & Gold won 34-24 on October 7, 2023.
