Yellow Jackets Drop Tight Contest to Rattlers

SPEARFISH, S.D. –  The Black Hills State Yellow Jackets were unable to grab a second straight win at A2 Arena as the Yellow Jackets fell to the Saint Mary's Rattlers 61-58 in comeback loss. The Yellow Jackets had a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and were unable to hold it as StMU made a very late bucket to put them over the top.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Mary's started the game off on a 9-3 run with BHSU's only points being an Audrey Norville three pointer. StMU made a three to take a 12-4 lead before Norville made another bucket to make it 12-7. Brinlee McRae ended the quarter with a jumper to send it into the second at 12-9. It was the first time in her career that Norville has had two threes in a game.
  • Addison Branscum would begin the second quarter with a three to tie the game and then the Rattlers would go on a 5-0 run to make it 17-12. Branscum would go on a 7-0 run by herself to give BHSU a 19-17 lead for their first lead of the game. After that, neither team scored for almost two and a half minutes before St. Mary's scored four straight to take a 21-19 lead. Bradie would answer with a basket to tie it and then Emily Cooper would hit a three with 41 seconds to go in the half to give BHSU a 24-21 lead going into the break.
  • Halftime leaders for the Yellow Jackets included Branscum, who had 10 points and four rebounds on 4-9 from the field. Audrey Norville was next with 6 points and four rebounds, while Bradie Schlabs had four assists. Christin Callens was the leader for St. Mary's. She had five points and six rebounds. Raynne Malik had four points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
  • Norville made a jumper to start the second half before the Rattlers went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-26 lead. Schlabs hit a three to cut it to one at 30-29. Allie Garcia made a bucket to get it back to 32-29 before Branscum hit another three to tie it at 32. Sawyer Stoebner got three straight points to put the score at 35-32 and then McRae and Alli Glasscock each hit jumpers to keep the lead at four 39-35. The Yellow Jackets ended the third quarter on a 4-2 run to take a 43-37 lead going into the final 12 minutes.
  • StMU started the fourth period on a 13-3 run to take a 50-46 lead with 6:10 remaining. Norville hit her third three of the night to cut it to 50-49. Branscum would sink two free throws to take the lead before a immediate jumper by Garcia made it 52-51. Branscum would make another jumper to get the lead back before Saint Mary's would make a three with 55 seconds left to grab the lead back at 57-55. Cooper would drive down and immediately chuck up a three to take the lead back at 58-57 with 49 seconds to go, but StMU would drive down and Callens would throw down a layup to jump in front 59-58 with 38 seconds left in the game. McRae would miss a jumper and BHSU would have one final shot by Schlabs that was blocked as Saint Mary's took the win 61-58.

UP NEXT
BHSU will now head on the road as they play three games in the next week versus Northern Sun teams. They will start their trip with the second half of a home-and-home versus Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday night and then will face Northern State and Sioux Falls over the weekend in Sioux Falls.
