Yellow Jackets Fall on Last Second Free Throws to Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The Yellow Jackets fall to Northern State for the 18th straight time as Northern's Izzy Moore hit two free throws with no time on the clock to give them the win. BHSU had the lead the entirety of the second half until the last 30 seconds and were unable to hold on to their 13-point halftime lead. They drop to 1-3 on the season with Addie Branscum and Allie Glasscock leading the way with 14 points and 12 points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northern State started the first quarter on an 8-2 run with a Emily Cooper jumper being the only basket for BHSU in the first three and a half minutes. Addie Branscum hit a three to get it back to 8-5 before Taylor Tool matched them with a three as well to get the lead to 11-5. With an Izzy Moore layup putting the score at 13-6, the Yellow Jackets would go on a 6-0 run with Glasscock hitting a layup along with Maureen Ulrich and two free throws from Audrey Norville. Two jumpers by NSU finished the first quarter with a 17-12 lead.
  • BHSU took over the second quarter with Branscum hitting an opening layup and Glasscock making a putback to get the score down to 17-16. The Jackets turned a 4-0 run into an 8-0 run with layups by Sawyer Stoebner and Glasscock. The two teams split the next eight points before Ulrich nailed a three to give BHSU a 27-21 lead, which was the biggest lead of the game so far for BHSU. The Green and Gold went on a 9-0 run with Norville and Glasscock combining for all those points. Moore hit a layup with 14 second to go and Glasscock hit one of two from the free throw line to give BHSU a 38-25 lead into the break.
  • Halftime leaders for the Yellow Jackets include Alli Glasscock, who easily has career highs in points with 12 and rebounds with six leading BHSU in both categories. Branscum had eight points and a steal, and Audrey Norville had seven points and three rebounds. Izzy Moore and Megan Counts each had eight points in the first half with Counts having three rebounds and Moore having two.
  • The Wolves started on an 8-1 run to begin the third quarter and got the score down to 39-33. BHSU finally hit their first field goal of the quarter with a Branscum layup to make it 41-33. NSU made a bucket and BHSU made two free throws to keep the lead at eight before the Wolves ended the third quarter on a 3-0 run to make it 43-38. BHSU went 1-17 from the field in the third quarter and only had five points.
  • The Yellow Jackets and Wolves traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter to keep the lead at five. Northern made another shot to get it down to three before Branscum and Fiedler traded baskets to keep it there. Cooper hit a three to make it 50-44 and then a couple of basket trades kept it at 52-46. Stoebner hit a layup to keep it at six and put the score at 54-48. Northern went on a 6-0 run to tie it at 54 with 32 seconds remaining. BHSU had a chance to dribble it out for the last shot but threw it away on an inbounds pass with six seconds left. Northern inbounded it and lost the ball, but on the scramble, they were fouled and Izzy Moore hit two free throws to make it 56-54 Northern with no time left for BHSU's 18th straight loss to NSU and third straight loss of the season.
