BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's and women's track & field teams posted another successful weekend as they saw nine individuals and one relay team improve upon, match, or find a spot on the Yellow Jacket All-Time Performance List at the SDSU Indoor Classic and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Highlighting the program's performances were school records by
Sylvia Brown in the 5,000m run in the meet hosted by Boston University, while
Jace Johnson notched the school record in the 200m dash in the meet hosted by South Dakota State University.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL
- For the second time this season Braden Anderson came within a single tenth of a second of the NCAA Division II provisional time (1:52.31) in the 800m run and was just 0.13 seconds off his school record in the event. He notched a time of 1:52.37 in the event and finished 66th overall out of 232 student-athletes in the event, including beating 46 NCAA Division I runners.
- After competing in his first meet of the season two weeks ago, Gavin Kuhlenbeck returned to the track in the 3,000m run as he posted a new career-best time as a Yellow Jacket with a mark of 8:38.61, an improvement of 12.68 seconds, as he finished 237th in the event of 243 student-athletes.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT SDSU INDOOR CLASSIC
- Getting the day started in Brookings was the 200m dash as the trio of Aiden O'Leary, Conor McGraw, and Jude Guevara led the way with times of 22.88, 23.06, and 23.08 respectively for 24th, 25th, and 26th place. The time for Guevara set a new career-best in the event.
- Caden Strasser paced the way for BHSU in the 800m run, clocking a career-best time of 1:55.81 for 13th place in the event, finishing just 0.13 seconds off securing a spot on the school's all-time performance list.
- Jaxon Straus and Braik Hurm recorded 22nd and 25th place finishes in the 5,000m run as they clocked times of 15:07.38 and 15:10.23 respectively. Hurm's time set a new career-best mark in the event, while Straus in his debut in the event notched the ninth-fastest time on the Yellow Jacket's all-time performance list.
- Chase Maher tied for the distinction of being the highest finishing NCAA Division II athlete and second overall in the pole vault as he cleared 4.70m (15' 5") to match his career-best mark and the sixth-best mark in program history.
- In the first event of the day on Saturday, Anthony Rosenstrauch and Logan Class led the way in the weight throw with 14th and 16th place finishes and marks of 14.52m (47' 7.75") and 14.39m (47' 2.5") respectively. Class's mark was a new career-best in the event.
- Matthew LoFaso was the highest finishing Yellow Jacket in the shot put competition, earning a 14th place finish on a throw of 13.85m (45' 5.25").
- Earning a top-5 finish in the long jump was Bridger Anderson as he posted a career-best mark of 6.56m (21' 6.25") for fifth place, while also in the top-10 was Jayden Curtis in ninth after a jump of 6.42m (21' 0.75").
- Casen Wilson posted a top-10 finish in the triple jump, recording a mark of 12.62m (41' 5").
- Jace Johnson punched his ticket to the 60m dash prelims as he clocked the fifth-fastest time in the qualifying heats with a time of 7.01. Then later in the prelims of the event he recorded a time of 7.05 for 22nd place.
- Straus paced the way in the mile for the Green & Gold, recording a 25th place finish with a career-best time of 4:17.95.
- In the prelims of the 60m hurdles, Curtis was the highest finishing Yellow Jacket, clocking a time of 8.79, just a tenth of a second off his career-best in the event, for a 23rd place finish.
- In the 400m dash, Flynn Johnston was the top BHSU athlete with a 38th place finish and career-best time of 50.50, tying for ninth on the school's all-time performance list.
- Breaking the school record in the 200m dash, Johnson ran to a time of 22.32 for a seventh place finish.
- The distance medley relay team of Jonah Rigg, Johnston, Drew Lehman, and Hurm ran to a fourth place finish and time of 10:19.70, the fastest time in the event for BHSU this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL
- Breaking her own school record in the 5,000m run was Sylvia Brown as she posted a career-best and NCAA Division II provisional time of 17:05.25 to finish 118th in the event of 167 athletes, besting 29 NCAA Division I athletes in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD AT SDSU INDOOR CLASSIC
- Kendall Tietjen led the way for Black Hills State in the first event of the day as she posted a time of 2:17.33 for 16th place in the 800m run, just 1.24 seconds off her career-best time set a few weeks back.
- Katelyn Krieger notched a 21st place finish in the 3,000m run as she tallied a career-best time of 10:25.51, shattering her previous best mark by 28.39 seconds set just a few weeks ago, and finishing just 1.69 seconds from earning a spot on the school's all-time performance list.
- Evie Boyd and Emma Hofmeister earned top-15 finishes in the 5,000m run, posting times of 17:56.62 and 18:15.22 respectively to both earn a spot in the Yellow Jacket's all-time performance list. Boyd's career-best time ranks seventh, while Hofmeister's career-best time ranks tenth.
- Matching her career-best mark and the seventh-best mark in program history, Erin Weibel tied for the distinction of being the highest finishing NCAA Division II athlete in the pole vault as she tied for third overall in the event as she cleared 3.60m (11' 9.75").
- To get Saturday's events started, Christianna Wall led the way in the weight throw with a seventh place finish and career-best mark of 14.25m (46' 9").
- Wall earned her second top-10 finish of the day with a throw of 11.89m (39' 0.25") in the shot put for an eighth place finish.
- Sophie Louderback notched a 28th place finish in the long jump as she tallied a mark of 4.88m (16' 0.25").
- Louderback was also the lone Yellow Jacket competing in the triple jump, posting a 16th place finish with a mark of 10.38m (34' 0.75").
- Returning for day two of competition in Brookings, Krieger was the highest finishing Yellow Jacket in the mile as she ran to a career-best time of 5:08.70 for a 33rd place finish, while also earning herself the ninth-fastest time on the BHSU all-time performance list.
- Alivia Weathers led the way in the 60m hurdles for Black Hills State, clocking a time of 9.83 for a 39th place finish in the prelims.
- In the 400m dash, Tietjen moved into fifth place all-time on the Yellow Jacket performance list, clocking a career-best time of 58.66 for a 15th place finish.
- Posting a top-10 time in the 800m run, Brooklyn Brooks ran to a career-best time of 2:29.15 for sixth place.
- The 4x400 relay team of Saraya Afrank, Carlie DeBoer, Jillian Brennan, and Tietjen ran to a ninth place finish and time of 4:02.01, ranking fifth all-time in school in the event.
