Yellow Jackets Pitchers Dominate as BHSU Sweeps to Win Series Over Rangers

SPEARFISH, S.D.- The Yellow Jackets allowed nine total hits today and only four runs with none of them being earned runs as the Yellow Jackets took two games today versus the Regis Rangers to get Black Hills State their third straight series win and third straight game win. BHSU had a team ERA of 0.00 today and had a 0.00 ERA over the last three games. To go with that, BHSU had two home runs in game four of the series to help move BHSU to the series win, with Carli Maley and Sammie Kaufman-Warner each hitting their third home run in the last two weeks.

  • Regis answered in the top of the second as Isabella Porter reached on an error and stole second base. After back-to-back strikeouts, Jessica Isbell reached on an error that allowed Porter to score from second and tie the game at 1-1 with the each run being unearned.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • After a three-batter top of the first inning, Carly Reyes Mims led off the inning with an infield single and Jessica Melendez also hit a soft-hit single to advance Reyes Mims. A double steal worked to perfection as the catcher for Regis made a bad throw that allowed Reyes Mims to score. After a flyout, the catcher tried to throw the ball to second to pick Melendez off, but it got away from the fielder and Melendez stole third anyway. That smart baserunning allowed a Maley single to score Melendez and give BHSU an early 2-0 lead.
  • Honse took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a ball that didn't even get close the pitcher's mound made it an infield single for Kiauna Smith. Honse got two groundouts in a row and in the bottom of the fourth inning, Theiler singled to leadoff the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wong and Lily Simmons walked. Katelyn Jarzobski hit a double to score Theiler and a Melendez groundout scored Simmons to put BHSU up 4-0.
  • Honse got around a runner on second to give BHSU the bats back and they delivered. Milanowski doubled to leadoff the inning and Maley mashed a homer to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-0 lead. Despite some more baserunners that was all that inning for the Jackets, but it was major runs.
  • After a quick inning for Honse in the top of the sixth, Sammie Kaufman-Warner finally found her pitch as she took a two-out pitch deep to right field and gave BHSU a 7-0 lead on one swing.
  • In the top of the seventh, things got a little dicey for BHSU. With one out, Bella Bordine singled and advanced to second on a bad field by Theiler. With two outs, Olivia Darby hit a soft single and got to second while Bordine to get to third on another error by Theiler. Sikora walked to load the bases and Natasha Ellison singled to score two runs and make it 7-2 with both runs being unearned. Olivia Wick walked to get the pinch runner Micha Pittman to second. Smith reached on an error by Simmons that allowed Sikora to score to make it 7-3 with that also being an unearned run. However, a fielder's choice ended the game at 7-3 giving BHSU the series win.
