Lehman and Smith Qualify for NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA announced the 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship qualifiers on Tuesday afternoon, which included the pair of Drew Lehman (triple jump) and Evan Smith (800m run) of the Black Hills State University men's track & field program. It will be the first national championship appearance for both sophomore athletes, and it will be the first indoor national qualifiers for the Yellow Jackets men since the distance medley relay team of Jordan Theisen, Tristan Hepp, Levi Fried, and Jonah Theisen in 2019. The NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Championships are set to be held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on March 13-14.

Evan Smith, a 2026 First Team All-Conference runner in the 800m run and a transfer from NCAA Division I George Mason, broke the school's 800m run record with a time of 1:49.89 at the WSC NCAA Showdown. His 800m run school record is the first sub-1:50 time in program history. His second place time of 1:51.61 in the 800m run at the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships converted to 1:48.48 to put him into the No. 5 seed nationally in the event. He also holds the school record for the 400m dash with a time of 48.96.

Drew Lehman, a First Team All-RMAC triple jumper, broke the school record in the event twice this season. He first broke a 50-year-old school record in the triple jump at the Dave Little Alumni Mile, becoming the first in program history to jump 48' feet as he posted a mark of 14.69m (48' 2.5"). He then re-broke his own record two weeks later at the Don Holst Open, jumping 15.26m (50' 0.75") for an NCAA provisional mark. He enters the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships ninth in the country. He also holds the second-best mark in school history in the long jump (7.16m, 23' 6"), and the seventh-fastest 60m dash time (7.04) in program history.
