Yellow Jackets’ Tournament Run Ends at the Hands of the Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Yellow Jackets were unable to get past the Colorada Mesa Mavericks and the Mavericks showed why they were the #4 team in the country with a 37-point win over BSHU 94-57. The Yellow Jackets fell down big early as Mesa took a 28-point lead into half and were unable to really stop Mesa offensively, who shot 59.7 percent from the field and Olivia Reed Thyne had a 40-point double-double while Brinlee McRae had 18 for the Yellow Jackets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brinlee McRae got the scoring off with a jumper before Mesa went on a 14-4 run to make it 14-6. BHSU was able to get it back to six with scoring four of the next six points. Mesa scored 10 of the final 16 points of the quarter with McRae making two more jumpers to keep the lead within ten at 26-16.
  • Mesa scored the first five points of the second quarter with Hallie Clark making a three-point jumper and Reed Thyne getting a three-point play. Serlen made a layup to make it 32-20 before Mesa went on an 8-2 run with a three from Clark and three baskets from Reed Thyne. Bradie Schlabs and McRae made jumpers between another three from Mason Rowland to make it 44-26, before CMU ended the half on a 10-0 run to make it 54-26 and send the Yellow Jackets down 28 going into half.
  • Halftime leaders for the Yellow Jackets include Brinlee McRae who had 14 points and went 7-12 from the field. Reed Thyne had 22 points and six rebounds for the Mavericks, while Rowland had 13 points and four rebounds and Hallie Clark had 10 points and four assists.
  • The third quarter was the best for the Yellow Jackets as they didn't let Mesa score two baskets in a row once, but also didn't score two in a row either. Taylin Serlen started the half with four of the first six points for the Yellow Jackets while Reed Thyne had 12 of the first 15 points for the Mavericks. Serlen, Schlabs, and Maureen Ulrich had 10 of the final 14 points for the Yellow Jackets in the quarter while Kenleigh Graham and Sawyer Stoebner also had two points in the period with neither team gaining any ground, Mesa went into the fourth up 77-46.
  • BHSU started the fourth on a 4-0 run with Norville hitting a hook shot. Mesa answered with a 6-0 run with three points from Rowland and Reed Thyne. After a Tess Rule layup, CMU went on an 11-2 run with a three pointer from Joslyn Spires. Taylor Ray ended the game with a three-pointer to make the final score 94-57.

UP NEXT
The Yellow Jackets postseason run ends and most likely, so did their season. They were not in the top ten of the regional rankings coming into this tournament, so this will probably be the last game they play, but they will still keep an eye on the selection show on Sunday.
