Yellow Jackets Just Miss Out on Win in Series Opening Doubleheader Versus Cougars

SPEARFISH, S.D.- The Yellow Jackets struggled in game one, but scared the Cougars in game two and kept it close enough that BHSU had a chance to win in the seventh, but were unable to get that win and fell in both games to the #9 Colorado Christian Cougars as BHSU has now lost five of their last six. The Yellow Jackets were trying to end a 34 game winning streak by the Cougars this season, but were not able to do so despite the Jackets hitting four home runs with Desi Hernandez hitting two of them.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Kat Hanson hit a double through the right side to leadoff the game and then came around to score on a two-out single by Felesha LePenske to make it 1-0 early for CCU.
  • In the top of the second inning, Maya Schroeder led off the inning with a single and stole second base. A single by Peyton Marvel allowed Schroeder to get to third and Marvel advanced to second on the throw. Paisley Williamson followed that up with a double to score both runners and make it 3-0. A one-out single by Hanson scored Williamson and CCU took a 4-0 lead before Kaitlyn Geschwill got her second strikeout of the inning and a flyout.
  • In the bottom of the second, Hernandez and Caylee Mann led of with back-to-back solo home runs over the same spot in left field to bring the score to 4-2.
  • In the top of the third inning was when CCU broke it open. LePenske singled and advanced to second on the walk to Leah Garcia. Schroeder doubled to score LePenske and put runners on the corners. That didn't last long as Marvel took the second pitch of the at bat deep to score three more runs and make it 8-2. After an out was recorded, Sarah Dollerschell hit a solo home run to make it 9-2. With the bases cleared, a double by Hanson and two walks loaded them up again, and with two outs, Garcia walked in another run to make it 10-2.
  • No runs were scored in the bottom of the third or the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Paige Goodell replaced Geschwill. She allowed a singled to Elyse McMullin, hit Arianna Wright and then walked LePenske to load the bases. A groundout scored McMullin, a line out scored Wright, and a double by Schroeder scored LePenske to make it 13-2.
  • Alyssa Wong walked to leadoff the bottom of the fifth. She immediately scored on a single by Fouras that was mishandled by the left fielder which allowed Wong to go all the way home to make it 13-3. Carli Maley doubled to score Fouras and BHSU was now down 13-4, but that was it as LePenske settled down and got the next three out to end the game in a run-rule.

McMullin walked and so did Wright to load the bases. LePenske singled to score the leading two runners and make it 2-0.
  • In the top of the fourth, Schroeder reached on a throwing error by Honse and reached all the way to third on it. Marvel hit a sacrifice fly to put CCU up 3-0. Williamson singled and with two outs stole second and third base. Kat Hanson took the next pitch after the second stolen base deep to put CCU up 5-0.
  • Just when it looked rough, Sammie Kaufman-Warner doubled to leadoff the bottom of the third inning and Hernandez sent a two-run home run deep to left field to close the gap to 5-2. Despite some more base traffic that was it for BHSU.
  • Honse held CCU scoreless in the fourth inning and Lily Simmons rewarded her by blasting a leadoff home run to make it 5-3. After that BHSU and CCU both had baserunners but none came around to score and the game ended just at that score of 5-3 with CCU holding on their 36th straight win.
