Yellow Jackets Drop Both Games Versus Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo.- The Yellow Jackets were unable to grab a win on day one of the series versus Colorado School of Mines as CSM took both game one and game two of the series with late inning charges that put it away despite BHSU coming back in both games. The Yellow Jackets struggled to get things to going offensively today and smart baserunning by CSM helped them take both matchups.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • After Mines got out of a two on, two out situation in the top of the first, Kellan Ton started what would be a fantastic day with a leadoff triple in the bottom half of the inning. She scored on a one-out single by Kendall Aragon to put CSM up 1-0.
  • No one scored in the second inning as Geschwill struck out the side for five straight strikeouts. In the bottom of the third, Ton hit a one-out single and advanced to third on a two-out single by Aragon. A double steal attempt ended with Ton scoring to make it 2-0 and Aragon being thrown out to end the inning.
  • After no runs scored in the fourth or fifth inning, BHSU finally found some baserunners in the top of the sixth when Desi Hernandez walked with one out. Carli Maley who pinch hit for Fouras walked with two outs, Jessica Melendez singled to score the pinch running Anna Gietzen and make it 2-1. Katelyn Jarzobski pinch hit for Brooklyn Theiler and then walked to load the bases before Delaney Milanowski pinch hit for Lily Simmons and got hit by a pitch to score a run and tie the game at 2-2. Carly Reyes Mims grounded out to end the inning, but the game was tied.
  • Colorado School of Mines, who had been quiet for two innings answered immediately. Ton singled and advanced to third on a double by Lauren Romero. Aragon reached on a fielder's choice that scored Ton and got no one out. Emily Rogers hit a bunt single to load the bases and Katie Bauer hit a single to score two more runs and make it 5-2. Despite more baserunning moves, Rogers was caught stealing home on a double steal attempt and Geschwill got out of it, but the damage was done and CSM took the win 5-2 after BHSU went down 1-2-3 in the seventh

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Taylor Wayne got out of a jam in the first and CSM immediately got to work offensively in the bottom of that inning. Ton singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Romero tripled to score Ton. Aragon bunt singled to reach base and stole second and a groundout by Bauer made it 2-0 with Romero making it to third. Grace Weiler singled to make it 3-0 before Honse got the next two batters out.
  • BHSU immediately answered back with the bats getting hot in the top of the second. Maley doubled to begin the inning, Melendez singled to put runners on the corners and Gietzen walked to load the bases. Simmons singled to score Maley as Melendez was thrown out at third. Wong singled to score a runner with two outs and Sammie Kaufman-Warner reached on catcher's interference to load the bases with the score being at 3-2. Desi Hernandez walked to tie the game before Mann flew out to leave the game tied at 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the second, Whisenand walked with one out and Ton reached on a fielder's choice to make it two outs. Romero singled to move Ton to third and stole second. Aragon singled to score both runners and make it 5-3 with the top of the lineup continuing to crush Yellow Jacket pitching. Bauer walked and Weiler singled to load the bases before Emiaj Self grounded out to end the inning.
  • In the top of the fourth, Reyes Mims singled to lead it off, Wong was hit by a pitch and Kaufman-Warner singled to load the bases with no outs. Madyson Ortiz settled down and got Hernandez to ground out, before allowing a single to Caylee Mann where Hernandez got out at second, but Wong scored to make it 5-4 and that was all in that inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Lindy French singled to lead it off, Kiyana Tsuei pinch ran and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Whisenand bunt singled and advanced Tsuei to third and then stole second. A wild pitch scored Tsuei and advanced Whisenand to third. Ton walked and Whisenand stole home on a double steal attempt that had Ton going back to first on the play which made it 7-4.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bauer walked and was pinch ran for by Sydney Pendowski who advanced to second on a walk by Weiler. A sacrifice bunt advanced them both and a fielder's choice scored Pendowski and made it 8-4 with French reaching. Rogers singled to score Weiler and make it 9-4, which is how the game ended as BHSU went down 1-2-3 in the seventh again.

The Yellow Jackets are now getting a little close for comfort with Mines in the conference standings, so BHSU will look to get some separation back in the doubleheader tomorrow looking to at least take one or maybe get the split.
