Clayton Koch

Clayton Koch is heading into his second year as Co-Director of Athletic Performance at Black Hills State where he currently overseas all areas of performance for football, volleyball, and softball.

Koch joined the BHSU Athletic Performance staff during the summer of 2023 where he oversaw, the strength and conditioning efforts for the Yellow Jacket football, volleyball, and women’s golf teams.

Before BHSU, Koch served as a Graduate Assistant strength and conditioning coach at Division I Western Illinois University where he assisted with football and oversaw strength and conditioning for men’s basketball, volleyball, and women’s tennis.

Prior to Western Illinois, Koch helped coach an eighth consecutive NSAA Title and NAIA playoff appearance at Dickinson State University where he was a graduate assistant coach. At DSU, he helped coach 17 All-NSAA conference football players as well as two AFCA All-Americans. Additionally, he assisted in strength and conditioning efforts with football and track & field, all while overseeing the strength and conditioning for men’s basketball, softball, cross country, and cheer. During his time in Dickinson, Koch also completed an internship for Sanford POWER where he assisted in all training facets at Dickinson High School and Middle School.

Leading into Koch’s success at WIU and DSU he completed multiple internships with Black Hills State University Strength and Conditioning where he worked with all university sports, and with Abilene Christian University Strength and Conditioning where he worked with football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball.

Koch obtained his bachelor’s degree from Black Hills State University in 2021 where he played football and worked as a strength and conditioning intern. During his time in Spearfish he played under current BHSU football coach, Josh Breske, and was part of the Yellow Jacket football program from 2016 to 2021.

Koch is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the NSCA and holds a CPR/First Aid/AED certification as well. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
