Jay Smith enters his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets. He coaches the linebackers, and acts as the Special Teams Coordinator.
Prior to coming to BHSU, Smith spent two seasons at Saint Joseph's College, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, where the Pumas went a combined 13-9 over those two years. Smith was the Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Assistant Coach/Video Coordinator for the Pumas.
Smith's defense at St. Joes led the GLVC in rushing defense at 104 yards per game, led the GLVC in turnover margin (+11), and led the league with a 40.1 yard per punt average, while ranking fourth in the nation in fumbles recovered.
Smith spent a season with NCAA Division I South Dakota State University where he was part of the defensive quality control staff. He also has stops at Southwest Minnesota State, North Dakota State College of Sciences, and Jamestown College.
Smith was the defensive line coach at Southwest, while he was the linebackers coach and special team's coordinator at NDSCS. At Jamestown, he was the defensive line coach.
Smith is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he earned his Bachelors' of Applied Science: Physical Education. He went on to earn his Masters' of Education in Sports Leadership from Southwest Minnesota State.
