JB Brown joined the Yellow Jacket football staff prior to the 2020 season as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
Prior to BHSU, Brown served as Linebackers Coach at Abilene Christian from 2017-19. In 2019, the ACU defense finished the season ranked top-40 nationwide in five major defensive categories: fumbles recovered (sixth), sacks (10th), tackles for loss (10th), turnovers forced (29th) and rushing defense (33rd).
Brown had two linebackers named All-American in 2019 and two named All-Conference in 2018. In 2017 he had one linebacker named All-Conference in addition to setting the school record for career tackles.
Before ACU, Brown coached at Colgate University as Outside Linebackers Coach from 2015-16. His defense helped Colgate win the Patriot League Conference in 2015 and advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the second time in school history. The 2016 Colgate defense ranked first in the Patriot League Conference and ranked in the top-40 nationally in nine major defensive categories, including: rushing defense (first), sacks (second), first down defense (second), third-down defense (12th), tackles for loss (19th), and total defense (29th).
Prior to Colgate, Brown was Graduate Assistant Linebackers Coach at the University of Buffalo from 2013-14. The 2013 Buffalo team recorded its winningest season (8-4) in school history and led to the team's second all-time bowl berth at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. There, Brown also coached Khalil Mack, who was first team All-American, MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Jack Lambert Award Winner and eventual No. 5 draft pick in the NFL Draft.
From 2011-12, Brown served as Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at Hastings College. The 2011 Hasting defense ranked in the top-40 nationally in 9 major defensive categories, including: rushing defense (5th), scoring defense (8th), first down defense (8th), and total defense (10th).
In 2010 he won a gold medal as Tight Ends Coach and Special Teams Coordinator for the USA Football National Team that played in the World Championships in Austria. One of the tight ends was named captain of the National Team and another was picked up by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers following the championship game.
Before that, Brown worked as a student coach and Graduate Assistant Offensive Line and Tight Ends coach at NW Missouri State University over a seven-year span (2004-10). The Bearcats compiled a 76-12 record, won one NCAA Division II national championship (2009), were four-time national runner-up, won five conference championships and won 46 consecutive conference games from 2005-10.
Brown earned both his bachelor’s degree in physical education (2008) and master’s degree in athletics administration (2011) from NW Missouri State.
