Joe Ashfield

Joe Ashfield joined the Black Hills State University football staff as Quarterbacks Coach prior to the 2020 season.

Prior to BHSU, Ashfield was the Offensive Line Coach at Rice University for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. At Rice, he saw eight players earn postseason honors from league coaches in 2018

Before Rice, Ashfield spent five seasons as an Offensive Assistant at Stanford (2013-17) where he assisted with offensive line.

Prior to joining the Cardinal in 2013, Ashfield served as the Offensive Coordinator at New Mexico Military Institute for two years and coached receivers at Loras College (Iowa) from 2008-10.

Ashfield played quarterback at St. John's (Minn.) under legendary coach John Gagliardi and then played professionally for one year in the German Football League (2001) before beginning his coaching career in New Zealand with the North Harbour Pride in Auckland from 2001-2004. He served as the head coach of the New Zealand National Team in 2004.

He returned to the United States in 2005, earning a master's degree from Delta State and worked as an offensive assistant at Stanford from 2005 and as a graduate assistant in 2006.

Ashfield resides in Spearfish with his wife, Susan.
