Before UTPB, Cervantes spent three seasons at East Los Angeles College as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Prior to his time in East Los Angeles, he served as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Victor Valley College.  During his three seasons, he helped the team to a 25-5 regular season along with two conference championships and a pair of bowl games. The defense finished ranked in the top-10 in California in 2014 and 2015. After being named recruiting coordinator in 2015, he helped 21 student-athletes earn scholarship opportunities at four-year institutions.

Cervantes started his coaching career as a graduate assistant, working with defensive backs and special teams at the University of the Incarnate Word. He spent two seasons at Incarnate Word and helped them to their first winning season in 2013. Cervantes earned his master’s degree in kinesiology from Incarnate Word.

He is a native of San Antonio, Texas and attended Brackenridge High School. Cervantes married his wife, Alyson, in the summer of 2019.
