Nicky Winterstein joined the Yellow Jackets as Athletic Events & Facilities Manager in February of 2023. In January 2024, Winterstein was promoted to his current role of Assistant Athletic Director for Events and Internal Operations.Â
In his role, he manages and maintains all BHSU athletic facilities, including the Donald E. Young Center and Lyle Hare Stadium, and oversees all internal and external events held within them.
A native of Blythewood, S.C., Winterstein brings three years of collegiate athletic experience working in events, operations and facilities.
Prior to BHSU, he was the Associate Athletic Event and Operations Manager at the University of Toledo from 2021-22 where he managed over 100 revenue generating special events on campus, and oversaw the facilities for 15 NCAA Division I teams.
While there, Winterstein directly supported the Assistant AD in management and oversight of the 26,000 seat Glass Bowl Stadium and 7,000 seat Savage Arena, while also developing and streamlining game day processes, parking plans, and other event procedures to ensure smooth operations.
From 2019-21, he was an Athletic Facilities Assistant at Toledo from 2019-2021, assisting in a variety of capacities, including facility oversight, event scheduling, and day-to-day operations.
Winterstein was a six-year student-athlete in baseball, spending three years at Division II Francis Marion University from 2017-2019 before transferring to the University of Toledo for his final three years of eligibility where the outfielder hit a combined .305/.380/.476 with 29 extra base hits, including seven home runs, and 54 RBI.
After making his first trip to the Black Hills in the summer of 2021 to play in a collegiate summer league for the Spearfish Sasquatch, Winterstein quickly fell in love with the area and knew he wanted to return one day. After a second consecutive summer as a member of the sasquatch team, he officially made Spearfish his home in February of 2023.
Winterstein earned his MBA in Leadership and Administration from Toledo in May 2022, and got his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Francis Marion in May 2019.
