Shaun Skavang joined the Yellow Jackets as Assistant Athletic Trainer in July 2019. In November 2023, Skavang was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer and now oversees the Black Hills State sports medicine operation on campus.Â
He is the primary athletic trainer for football and men’s basketball, while assisting with all other sports.
The last two seasons has seen Skavang cover the BH men's basketball program who made back-to-back runs to the NCAA Division II Final Four for Coach Thompson and company.Â
Before BHSU, Skavang was an Assistant Athletic Trainer at South Dakota Mines from 2015-2019 where he started as the primary AT for men’s soccer and men’s basketball, before later shifting to football and men’s and women’s track and field.
He served as Interim Head Athletic Trainer at Laramie County Community College from 2014-2015, overseeing all responsibilities for the sports medicine department, including AT services to six varsity teams, as well as managing a budget, ordering supplies and processing insurance claims.
Prior to that, Skavang had a brief stint at SD Mines as an athletic trainer in 2014 after working as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Wyoming from 2011-2013 where he was the primary AT for football, men’s and women’s track and field and cross country, and cheerleading.
Skavang got his start at Minnesota Vikings training camp with a pre-season internship in 2010. He earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from MSU Mankato in 2011 and a master of kinesiology and health degree from Wyoming in 2013.
