Golden, Colo. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team fell in the first game of the 2011-2012 regular season to Colorado Mines on Friday. The Yellow Jackets were hot from behind the three point line in the first half, but were unable to hold off the Mines offensive push as they fell to the Orediggers by a score of 56-87.
The Yellow Jackets fell behind early in the first half, but were able to chip away at the lead and pull back within one point at 18-19 through impressive three point shooting. Black Hills State netted seven of 10 three point attempts in the first half. However, a late first half run by the Orediggers led to an eventual 30-48 halftime score. Colorado Mines continued to build to their lead in the second half as the Yellow Jackets shot 37% from the field and just 41% from the charity stripe. The Yellow Jacket shooting woes proved to be enough to solidify the win by Colorado Mines.
Black Hills State was led offensively by the freshman trio of Brady Bisgaard, Brody Brisk, and Joey Mitchell. Bisgaard, a redshirt freshman from Belle Fourche, netted 12 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Brisk also stepped-up big offensively for the Yellow Jackets with 11 points of his own. The redshirt freshman from Rapid City also pulled down three rebounds and had one block on the evening. The final double digit scoring performance for the Yellow Jackets was provided by true freshman Joey Mitchell who scored 12 points to go along with two rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action against Metro State College as they look for a win on the road. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. MT on Saturday November 19, 2011.
