Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team won one game and lost two on Saturday in Spearfish, S.D.
In the first game of the day, Black Hills State took an early 1-0 lead on Mayville State in the bottom of the third inning off of a Kelli Heiser homerun. The Yellow Jackets put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning including a solo homerun by Kelsie Chambers, her ninth of the season. Katie Wagner was solid in the circle for the Yellow Jackets giving up only one run on five hits. Black Hills State defeated Mayville State 5-1.
The second game for Black Hills State against the Comets ended in an 11-5 loss. The Yellow Jackets bats came to life with five players recording a multi-hit game. Alex Huntington was 2-for-4 in the contest and drove in three runs. The Yellow Jackets could not stop Mayville State though. The Comets scored 11 runs on only seven hits. Black Hills State game up all 11 runs to Mayville State in the final three innings.
Black Hills State would face Minot State in the final game of the day. The game had been rescheduled due to inclement weather. The Yellow Jackets would fall in six innings to the Beavers by a score of 13-5. Black Hills State struggled defensively in the contest giving up 14 hits and committing four errors in the game. Chambers once again came through with her bat going 2-for-3 in the game and driving in three runs. Chambers would also take the loss from the pitching circle.
The Yellow Jackets are now 8-21 overall and 3-8 in Dakota Athletic Conference play. Black Hills State will return to action on Sunday for a doubleheader with Mayville State. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Black Hills State softball complex.
