Rapid City, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team rolled past rival S.D. School of Mines & Technology by a score of 76-60 Tuesday evening to improve to 5-11 on the season behind a solid offensive performance by senior Rob Johnson and junior Tommy Earl who each scored 17 points.
"I thought we put together a 40 minute game tonight," said Head Coach Bradd Schafer. "I give a lot of credit to our young guys, give credit to Tech, they cut our lead to ten, but we worked hard and were able to stretch that lead back to 15 to end the game. Defensively we had a great team effort. We held them to 60 points and anytime you do that you give yourself a good shot to win the game."
Black Hills State had a strong night offensively as they shot 45% from the floor for the game and 41% from behind the arc, and hauled in three more rebounds than the Hardrockers. The Yellow Jackets had a strong first half as they took a 40-24 lead going into intermission; each team scored 36 points in the second frame.
Black Hills State's offense was firing on all cylinders throughout. The Yellow Jackets were led by Rob Johnson and Tommy Earl who each scored 17 points. Freshmen Brody Brisk and Joey Mitchell each added 11 points. Johnson finished the game with nine rebounds, one assist and one block.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday January 27 as they host Northern New Mexico at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish.Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT.
