Spearfish, S.D. - The Black Hills State women's basketball team picked up their second consecutive win at home as they took on Johnson & Wales University in a Saturday afternoon match-up at the Donald E. Young Center. The Yellow Jackets looked strong throughout the contest as they pressed their way to an 80-53 victory.
Black Hills State stretched their win streak to two games on the weekend as they showed their dominance on their home court for the second night in a row. The Yellow Jackets were dialed in all game long as they continued to shoot the ball well throughout. Black Hills state shot the ball 54% from the field and crashed the boards with tenacity as they reeled in seven offensive and 32 defensive rebounds. The Yellow Jackets also shot the ball well from the free-throw line as they went 14-19 for 73% on the evening.
The Yellow Jackets had three players finish in double figures. The biggest highlight in the game was sophomore forward Jordan Kent. Kent put on an offensive clinic in the paint, scoring 23 points and shooting 90% (9-10) from the field. As if her scoring contribution wasn't enough, Kent also stepped up as a defensive stopper pulling down 5 rebounds and adding two blocks and two steals to the stat column. Kent's performance was backed up by freshman Cassidy Kotelman who continues to emerge as one of the most consistent Yellow Jackets on the court. Kotelman added 12 points of her own as she went 5-7 from the field. True freshman Chelsey Biegler was the third Black Hills State player to finish with a double digit scoring tally. Biegler netted 11 points and pulled down three rebounds.
"I was really proud of the way our team came out and played hard for all forty minutes of the game," said head coach Mark Nore about the win. "Jordan Kent stepped up and had a great game for us inside. When we are able to run our offense from the inside out, it opens up looks for our perimeter shooters and makes us a tough team to match offensively."
The Black Hills State women will return to action on Friday February 3 as they travel to Denver for a rematch against Johnson & Wales University. The Yellow Jackets will tip-off at 5:00 p.m. MT as they look to extend their win streak to three games on the road.
