Box Score

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Black Hills State men's basketball team fell in a 71-89 shootout to Augustana on Wednesday night.

Joey Mitchell and Austin Maag each scored a team-high 17 points to lead the offensive for the Yellow Jackets. Mitchell was lethal from beyond the arc as he went 5-of-6. Maag was 5-of-12 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Cameron Anderson led the rebounding efforts for the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 11, and Tanner Adler dished out five assists along with his 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets shot just 17 free throws, compared to Augustana's 39.

The Vikings were led by Cameron McCaffey's 23 points.

The Yellow Jackets went back-and-forth with the Vikings in the first half and took the lead 17-14 off a Mitchell 3-pointer with 11:29 remaining. Augustana was able to stretch the lead 35-42 going into halftime.

"In the first half, I thought we got back and guarded them defensively," said head coach Bradd Schafer. "I thought offensively we did some nice things moving the basketball and we competed in the first half."

BHSU came out with intensity in the second half and brought the game within one, 43-44. Augustana used a balanced offense to put points on the board, including 6-of-10 from 3-point land in the final 17:28 of play.

On the game, the Yellow Jackets shot 25-of-60 (41 percent) from the field, including 10-of-24 on 3-pointers.  BHSU shot 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

Schafer said that BHSU's rebounding and defensive efforts have to improve going forward.

"You take those two factors in and that makes up a lot of points," said Schafer. "I thought we did a great job competing and we played hard. We had some guys step-up offensively, but we have to continue to get better defensively and rebounding. Those are the two areas that have been our biggest downfall so far this season."

The Yellow Jackets will now travel home to play South Dakota Mines for their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.

"We get four at home starting with South Dakota Mines," said Schafer. "Everything we have done so far has been on the road, so it will be nice to be home for a couple weeks."
